There had been repeated warnings that the coffee was being made way too hot, and her injuries were incredibly severe (the pictures are horrifying), such that they apparently shortened her life. There were a ton of circumstances that led the jury to side with her.

Will this guy be able to check as many boxes? Will he be able to prove that the coffee was excessively hot and not just an appropriate temperature? I kind of have my doubts.
Thank you for educating the thread, JrzDefector. Every time I hear the McDonald's case used as a prime example of our overly-litigious society, I recall that I'd read that she actually had a case. But I don't know enough about it to list the facts as you have done here, so thank you for being the person to take the time to do that.

I've had second degree burns before and that was painful enough. Was $3mil excessive? The jury wanted to send a message. You be the judge.
Thank you also. This deserves to be heard.

"emotional damage"? A loss of "a source of emotional support"?

Cop sues Starbucks after free coffee spills, burns him | New York Post

A Raleigh police officer who got a free cup of Starbucks coffee is suing the company for $50,000 after he spilled it and got burned.
WRAL-TV reports attorneys said in court Monday that Matthew Kohr should be compensated for burns, blisters and emotional damage caused after the officer spilled a cup of coffee in his lap in 2012.
Kohr says in the lawsuit the lid popped off a cup of coffee he ordered at a Raleigh Starbucks and the cup collapsed.
Kohr claims the incident caused such severe stress that it activated his Crohn’s disease, which resulted in surgery to remove part of his intestine. The lawsuit also claims Kohr’s wife, Melanie, lost a “source of emotional support, her social companion and her intimate partner.”

See, the police understand how the legal system works....
I'm shocked he's only going for $50,000 with the laundry list of complaints, including losing his wife. $50,000 is peanuts.

He re-evaluated the impact on his life and emotions. He feels that another $700k would help ease his anxiety and replace his job Check out the previous link i posted which states the new amount.

It was something like 175-180 degrees, which is ridiculous. Funny thing is even today I'm fine with Dunkin Donuts coffee, 7-11, Wawa, etc... (Except Starbucks, I refuse to pay that much for a cup of coffee.) Anyway, I still need at least 3 creams to cool down the McDonalds coffee, and that pretty much goes for any McDonalds, whether it's in PA, DE, or MD.
