Sadly, Republicans don't want to invest in US infrastructure. They'd rather squander trillions in Iraq and Iran.

And FYI, the tracks are owned by the railroads, not the government. They're not roads.
On top of that, Amtrak leases the majority of the tracks they use from companies like Union Pacific, BNSF, CSX, etc. Blame them if you need someone to blame.
It's a tragic loss but hopefully this makes more Americans wake up and demand that Washington invest more money in our crumbling infrastructure instead of world police missions. A significant number of our bridges, highways, and rails are in need of replacement. I believe the ASCE rated US infrastructure a D+ which is terrible. Sad that people have to die before anything gets done.

You all are on here yammering about democrats, republicans and infrastructure, none of which has anything to do with this incident. It doesn't matter what state the rails were in, over twice the speed limit around a curve will have the same results.

How is it that you alone here are privy to the nationality/religious beliefs of the engineer?
On the trips I've made between OK and Califorinia on amtrak, you travel the southern route into Texas, then virtually crawl at twenty of so mph around a lot of twisty tracks in west texas. The trip is two days, much of that due to the severe speed limitations they have in that area. The tracks are old and even freight obeys the speed limit. It's still scary thinking about how so much is depending on these old, outdated tracks not failing. Despite logicstical problems I like taking the northern route, through Colorado and Kansas, and having to get a ride home from Kansas. The tracks are not relics and its half the time.
And yes, tracks are often owned by a railroad. Where I lived in CA there were TWO tracks running right behind our backyard fence, brand new so they could go top speed. It was owned by burlington northern. When you'd see the tankers you just wished them to speed past and have their accident somewhere else. Where the tracks are owned by a company, neither cities nor individuals can file complaints about their cargo or noise.
I'm pretty sure we had a few earthquakes which we just figured were trains.
