Very suspicious that the machine was set to start when the lid was closed!

Um, what? It was some plot by the mom to get rid of her toddler by setting up the washer that way?

What exactly is suspicious, and whom are you suspicious OF?

Older machines if they are stopped mid cycle, or even set to the beginning of the cycle will "hold" and then when the lid is shut, it comes on. Its only the front loading and newer ones with extra safety features that don't.

This is another case for part of child proofing is to adjust the water temp from the water heater. It sounds like this kid was burnt. If it was set to the right temp, she wouldn't have been burned by it at all. Most washing machines will not be able to do the spin cycle if something the size of a 3 year old is in there.

Yes, a drugged up mother who wasn't very interested in actually taking care of her young child and thought of an accident that would solve her problem and not look like she did it!

Wait...she's pregnant & taking tranquilizers?

Programmed to start automatically? Looks like I should be looking for a new washer. My washer won't run with the lid up as there is a safety switch. And won't run until the wash cycle button is pushed in.

Its so easy to think in black and white here. I do think we should reserve our judgement. I stalked her FB page today. I expected to see a super self absorbed mom. I didn't. She seemed to love her girls. Cherished them, even. She did seem to have problems. But you could tell her daughters were the light of her life. She has a stable relationship. And she disputes what the articles say about her.

She doesn't take responsibility. She doesn't seem to think she will be in trouble in the long run. She feels it was a terrible accident.

I don't know. I am a good judge of character. I think this mom leaves a lot to be desired. But I think part of this is a scape goat mission.

I could be wrong.

If you start the old ones, but don't close the lid it will be ready to start when the lid is closed. Then it is locked unless someone on the outside stops it. I did this all the time with my old machine. Got it ready, went around the house picking up clothes. If it wasnt full, I might have waited a while to close the lid

The lid was somehow closed. That is known.
