Yeah, they don't. They are not doing dangerous work, unless you call getting a papercut hazardous.

You'll notice that the only surviving unions are in sectors that can't get pushed offshore or moved south to an anti-union state. Public sector. Truck drivers. UPS/Fedex/USPS. Hospital workers. Airline pilots. Construction/trade workers.
In this case, it was a billionaire making a political statement about unions. If it had been some entrepreneur doing a web/internet enterprise, they wouldn't have shut the doors out of spite.
The Republican party and the rich people who back them have done a great job creating knee-jerk anti-union sentiment among people who are seeing their jobs vaporize offshore.
It is easy to see what unions can do for employees.......take a trip to Detroit and look around. Not only did they cause thousands and thousands of people to lose their jobs but they also completely destroyed a city.
Unions would be great if they would operate properly. What they typically do is stuff the pockets of their administration and incite poor work moral by constantly telling the members the company they work for is out to screw them and doesn't care about them. The unions also protect the bad employees through grievances resulting in the company not being able to fire/get rid of bad employees.
If you are a business owner and the employees join a union, the best thing you can do is shut the business down long enough to reorganize and then start it back up again with new employees.

There is NO market anywhere that functions efficiently with all of the power vested in just one side of it. Even those who failed Econ 101 must recognize that much.

That's when the power of competition comes into play.
I work in the banking industry. When one company has a reputation of having better pay/benefits/management, word gets around. Pretty soon, a lot of companies start losing talent to the better one. As a result, the other banks improve their pay/benefits/management.
There are situations where there is no competition. There are a lot of small towns with only one factory or large employer. Those non-union factories can take advantage of the fact that those people don't want to leave that small town. But if they become unionized as a result, the factory can just choose to move somewhere else. Then it becomes a ghost town. It happens. People should be willing to move for better opportunities.
