Palmer Township police say the accident occurred around 3 p.m. Thursday, moments after 66-year-old Debra Mitchell got out of the car.
Mitchell was walking toward the back of the vehicle when she apparently fell, possibly due to a medical problem. Authorities say her husband, 66-year-old Terry Mitchell, was unaware she had fallen and ran over her as he backed out of the driveway.
Still, I don't really get how this happens if you're paying attention before you start backing out of your driveway. I have a van. We live on a curve. If there are people or animals nearby, I make a mental note and back out very slowly, stopping if I lose sight of the person or the animal. I only resume backing once I see they're out of harm's way. I'm also watching for vehicular traffic. I have mirrors, of course, and a backup camera but they don't catch everything.

Maybe he was one of those guys who shotgun their vehicle out into the street.
When I saw the thread title, the first thing I thought about was another particular tragic back-up accident....In 2008, singer Steven Curtis Chapman's teenage son was backing up the family Land Cruiser in the driveway and hit his 5 year old sister Maria Sue, who later died at a Nashville area hospital.

Or maybe he wasn't.
And if every driver were careful and observant, there would be no accidents.
Should have had a 2018 or newer Subaru Outback Touring or vehicle with similar capabilities. It has a backup camera, ultrasonic sensors and automatic emergency reverse braking. My wife has one and she'll be hard pressed to back up over someone.
