I agree, rivers/bodies of water define cities. It's obvious the Charles River in Boston or Lake Michigan in Chicago define those cities. However, let's look a little closer to home:

Look at New Orleans. Nothing beats strolling along the Moonwalk from the French Quarter to the Aquarium. Of course, the MS River is New Orleans' raison d'etre.

Look at San Antonio. The Riverwalk defines what San Antonio is, and face it, the San Antonio River downtown is basically a ditch that has been made to look real good. It is smaller than the Trinity River - oh and it's subject to flooding as well.

Look at Houston. They've started to develop around Buffalo Bayou, and it's starting to look good.

Come on, even Houston is ahead of you on this Dallas. Get your a$$ moving!

People didn't see the vision when New Orleans decided to transfer old rundown warehouses into the Warehouse District, with art galleries and museums.

People didn't see the vision when they decided to turn a disease infested ditch into the premier attraction in San Antonio.

People don't see the vision right now when they are converting Fresh Kills into the largest urban park in the country.

Even if this is not as good as projected, ANY IMPROVEMENT is better than what is there. Right now the Trinity River is an eyesore on the Dallas landscape. Something needs to be done about it and quickly.

Hot weather shouldn't stop a park from being created, just like cold weather shouldn't stop a park from being made up North.

Yes, there may be fewer people in the park on a 107 degree day, but imagine the 75 degree spring days. The park would be packed to the gills.

Also, down here in Austin, I see people at Zilker Park and jogging around Town Lake when it's 107. Just as you'd see people in Central Park when it's 7 degrees. People trudge through Seaworld or Six Flags in 107 degree weather, go to baseball games (Rangers), mow the grass, etc... You don't not build a park because it may be too hot some months of the year.

Part of the definition of a city are the climatic conditions prevalent there. Nothing beats going to Preservation Hall in New Orleans and getting drenched in sweat because they have no A/C but you don't care because the music is that good. In fact, if they had A/C the experience wouldn't be so vivid in my mind to this day. Or taking the ferris wheel in Chicago, freezing your butt off but it's still fun.

If you build it, they will come.

Now look at these photos and tell me how this is not an improvement over what's there?

what is the feasibility of creating 1 big lake downtown between new reinforced levees? I always thought that would be a better idea than having the park inside the levees.

^^^This for sure.

To be frank, Dallas doesnt really have one. We have unaccurate stereotypes, but not really something people can associate with us.

Dallas is one of the few major cities Worldwide that doesnt really stand out for one reason or another.

I'm not sure I agree with that. I think Dallas is strongly identified with cowboys.

I suppose maybe we meant an accurate identity. What about the city of Dallas has anything to remotely to do with cowboys (besides the name of the football team)?

I certainly don't want to be associated with Jerry Jones Cowboy era...anyone who grew up here prefers the classy Cowboys of Tom Landry, Tex Schramm, Gil Brandt and Clint Murchison.
