Hey, I'm all for tooting the horn for our schools, but I find it interesting that those tooting the horn (ad nauseum) don't have children attending those schools but have plenty of property interests in Lakewood.

And to be fair, this is a board dealing w/a lot of relocations. These people probably haven't even been to Dallas and all they know is what they've heard from outsiders and that would probably be about the suburbs. But those that know Dallas realize there are plenty of gems in the city of Dallas. Dallas really is the place to be (but bring your wallet).

Frankly, I think it'd be a great idea to have a thread for everyone to post positives on all the schools/school districts in the metroplex (without the sarcasm, of course!) as schools seems to be at the top of the priority list of most of those relocating here.

I have only one property in Lakewood Elementary district. My niece will start there next year. And I have the kids of my friends/classmates who are like family to me going there.. AND I am a proud alumnus. Lakewood is unlike other schools. Most kids from Lakewood are friends for life, live in the same neighborhood for generations, have some of the same relatives, had the same teachers, went to the same churces, same scout and YMCA tribes etc.

Whoever first said "Mayberry with money" is right.

You're not going to find that in a Siberian suburb where attendance zones are changed every year and people are moving in and out with job transfers.

And it is news when a Dallas school is one of the best in Texas (see Texas Monthly). Don't be too jealous!

Yes, it's just that easy! You'll learn: "old = good, new = bad", how to move a family of 6 into a 1200sf bungalow, musicals are fun! Also, suburban living sucks! Let's all cram into an uptown highrise - after all, we all work downtown, right? Don't forget, only in LAKEWOOD can you have a neighborhood feel. Plus, you know we have the top 2 schools in the country (according to some magazine) - as long as your kids are extremely gifted (aren't they all?). There is so little to learn in so much time! Act NOW! Who needs a metropolitan area or job growth, let's all live in LAKEWOOD!
Just gave YOU rep points for that one LOL

Just think how awesome this forum would be if people responded to those accomplishments with "How great!" instead of snarkiness.

Great job Lakewood!

You're absolutely right - great job to all the schools in the area that were awarded a Blue Ribbon.

The snarkiness was obviously not directed at the school or the accomplishment. I think you've been on here long enough to understand the dynamics.

Oh, I know. I just get kind of tired of having such snarkiness interjected at random intervals. Hair salons, blue ribbon schools - yep, exactly the spot to drag in the city vs the suburbs fight.

This really is true. Built out districts have more money to devote to specials, special needs and vangaurd programs because their bonds aren't spent on new schools in constantly expanding areas.

As to cramming all your kids into a bungelow to be in town...kids used to be able to share rooms. Rich, and I mean really wealthy, kids even. People still do this in central Houston. 750k for 2400 sf house with three bedrooms built in the 60's.The attitude that each child must have their own room, Ipod, bathroom and car is a generational thing. And then everyone wonders why they won't leave home and get a job.

That would be nice but forget it. From what I've seen, anyone posting something positive about a suburban school or (horrors) suburban living, in general, would get a boiler plate lecture on how ignorant and shallow they are. Interestingly, many of these comments come from people who profess as to having never lived in a suburb but, somehow, know all about them. Sadly, it's not worth it.
