There was a Rudy's on Lemmon, until late 90's or so, then closed. I'd agree, aside from the cows hanging around, it wasn't that great. I recall being curious about that, 'why all the acclaim?' I'd certainly had better but figured it justified their apologizing for shutting down.

Last I saw, the place was Tower Records.

Backcountry BBQ, Park Lane at Greenville (just north of Park on Greenville, east side)

Superb. For sho the best brisket in north Dallas at the very least (forget Bakers Ribs or Sonny's or Big Al's...). Very consistent over the last 20 years or so. Nice sides too (esp. potato salad). Great smoky flavor, lean but tender - almost flaky like pot roast or something - not a hint of rubbery consistency like other places.

A side note to this place is the condiment table with onion, pickle etc. .. I think they must smoke the raw onions for a while and they have the great flavor. I sneak some home and put them on everything, as long as I can make them last.

YES, I live in Uptown and drive all the way to Coppell to eat there. Their brisket and sausage is excellent.

Op, where did you choose?

I have to say that I grew up where when we had a party in the summer, we always did a backyard bbq. It was the tradition that my parents loved doing. I was so picky I wouldn't eat the stuff as a kid. It isn't a slap against my parents, my pops actually made great bbq as I discovered in my olden years, it can be an aquired taste which I started to love beef brisket in my adulthood.

I wanted to pipe in if you haven't tried anything yet, it is a chain but Dickey's is really good. I enjoy eating there with my family. I like Sonny Bryans too, very good, but as someone said, it depends on location. I was told that certain days, the brisket at Sonny Bryans was better due to it is fresh cooked. I don't know if that is true or not but could make one understand why it is hit or miss. I think the Sonny Bryans in Dallas near the hospitals cook it everyday.

Hard 8 is in Coppell is very close to DFW, maybe 10 minutes if you go out the north entrance.

Hard Eight is decent. But it's not Pecan Lodge or Lockhart!

Pecan Lodge is very overrated...it is good but I even like Dickey's better.
