I was always under the impression that Dallas was a warm weather city like Houston that didn't receive cold weather so what's up with the snow? If Dallas is supposedly warm all year round then explain the snow

Your impression has obviously always been wrong.

Weather happens... Dallas is much further NORTH than Houston. I don't think that Dallas "is warm year-round"... that would be Florida!

And snow occasionally even falls in Houston, as it did this year:

It's global warming! Seriously though, we're in an El Nino year, which means a colder winter for our part of the globe. This is VERY unusual!!

It dips into the 20's and 30's in Florida. Even as far south as Orlando. But for the most part its in the 60's-70's for 3 months in the winter. I love florida winters.

It gets cold in Dallas. It rarely snows but the highs are normally in the 40's-50's from December through February. But occasionally it gets into the 70's like it was the day before it snowed.

This sums up Dallas weather:

Winter (3 months): could be as cold as the 20's but could also be 70's
Spring (2 months): 70's
Summer (5 months): HOT AS HELL usually above 95 sometimes up to 110
Fall (2 months): 70's

I understand the first poster's comments totally.

I think the misunderstanding comes from some people who generalize and say Texas is soooo hot and there is no winter here...I mean, I guess those posters are originally from Siberia or something because there certainly is a winter here. I too expected fewer snow events and nights in the low 20s...but the frequency with which it snows and gets and stays cold with no warm ups has surprised me.

But at the same time I try not to get down and just appreciate it, for the first time in my life I own a pair of nice leather gloves and a hat so I feel like a different person, and I have learned that if you dress for the cold, it really isn't "that" bad. Also, the sun shines here even when its cold, so that helps in my opinion. Oh, and remember, in Florida you get paid in "sunshine" dollars, in other words, you are earning squat for having the privilege of living in an area with premium weather. Here there are jobs, affordable housing, a higher standard of living...so it helps keeping things in perspective too.

And last year on December 26, 2008 the high temp was 83. You never know around here. Like Florida, they have cold areas as well and so does Texas . As someone else said, we are much further north than Houston so we see more cold weather than they do. Besides, this was the first snow on Christmas in 83 years. LOL!!!

It is supposed to be colder and wetter this year. yippie.......not.

Mom,
DH swears there was snow on Christmas when he was 5. Cuz he'd gotten a tonka dump trunk and was playing in the snow with it. That would have been maybe 1962?

I wouldn't know. Not quite that old. He has me beat by a few years and I mean ONLY a few I remember plenty of WARM Christmas years w/ shorts and t-shirts out riding our bikes and all. That is one great thing about Dallas at Christmas as the kids can usually go out and use their new toys from Santa. Mine has been out on her new skateboard already a few times with the sun shining.
