Anyways, Jersey Mike's is expanding across the area:

Therapy Cafe is remodeling its space at the Cannery:

And a number of Dayton-based companies are opening new offices and other outlying operations in other cities... I think there were like 3-4 separate stories of this in today's and yesterday's DDN and DBJ.
Yep, that development has been great. We have so much potential for logistics type jobs throughout the region. Hopefully, we find a way to capitalize on it. One problem with some cities/areas is land. I know a lot of people don't like demolishing buildings, but sometimes that is needed. I know a lot of companies leave Dayton because there isn't enough space where they are. We need to find a way to open up land for companies to come in or expand.

^On this point I'll have to respectfully disagree.

Take a look around the city via streetview. There's a lot of vacant land out there! Both in city limits and outside of it, with good highway visibility and without. All kinds of space to develop.

My worry is that we're tearing down too fast. A lot of stuff being plowed down is fine structurally - like look at Student Suites and the honeymoon deal Rauch received to plow down the old DDN and Schwind buildings. Student Suites could have rehabbed the Schwind and DDN, both of which together were probably about the same size as what will be built (if it ever happens). And the cost of rehab most likely would have been less than demo + new build, if the demo hadn't been subsidized by the city, because the Schwind had previously been apartments! The stupidity sometimes....

And it's continuing again with demolitions in Old North Dayton for..... a new unnecessary roadway? Which is especially stupid considering a better path for the road could be ran over the space where a couple of beautiful, solidly-built historic buildings had already been freshly demolished.

Every single one of these buildings is in the "line of blighted buildings" to be demolished:

Here's what's already been demolished:

And here's where they could, very easily, run the road instead (suggestion in green, current proposal in red) I apologize for my dismal Paint skills:

I am not saying do it everywhere. The fact is most companies want land to build "their" building. I also come from a different point of a view as I live in a city (Kettering) where we have almost no land. I just hate losing out for a company, because they don't have room to expand or the city won't work with them.

Five Oaks *is* doing very well. Thanks for bringing that up! We've welcomed several new families into the neighborhood this month and are expecting more in the spring. Brilliant Tooth Dental is opening soon at 1203 Salem, Quincy's is opening Dec. 1 at 865 N. Main, and three new community gardens are in the works! Also, we just had our neighborhood elections last week and yours truly was nominated and elected to a new position as an At-Large Representative for Five Oaks. I was also nominated by FROC for a new position with elections in January, so we'll see how that goes.

Our garden at Helena and Main is starting to look amazing--they've installed the raised beds and are building covered areas for the plants.

FROC, Five Oaks, and Santa Clara are also working with the Linda Vista Project and Kaboom! to build a new playground on Linda Vista.

All in all, Five Oaks is doing great! Thanks for asking!

Ah I see. Makes sense haha. Kettering is a city where there's virtually no room left, aside from Research Park, so the re-use there has been interesting.

And it shows Kettering is a very healthy city.

Yeah. I just look at an area like Wilmington Pike. Everything is being built just outside of Kettering. Who knows if the same stuff would have been built in Kettering if they had the land, but I would have to think some would have been. There are a lot of independent buildings and I wish the city would buy them up and demolish them, so they have something that a developer would be interested in. Instead, those small, individual buildings keep getting filled in with companies/stores that aren't that good (if you ask me). Again, it isn't something to do in every city and every place in a city. Just something that should be available and discussed.

Downtown plan: free shuttles, river development | www.mydaytondailynews.com

I like the idea of helping entrepreneurs out and building on the progress along the river. Also, I wish they would make the river more of a river, if you know what I mean. I know why it isn't, but it is so low and often times there are "islands" in the middle of the river, because of how low it is.
