Rehoboth man arrested for panhandling - By Ryan Mavity - CapeGazette.com - Covering Delaware's Cape Region - Inland Bays, Atlantic Ocean, Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Milton, Dewey Beach, USA

Thought this might interest those think of vacation /moving to the area. A man was arrested for panhandling in Rehoboth. Since this is sooo common in other areas I found it interesting both that someone would complain to police and that they would actually arrest him rather than running him off.

When arrested, does he get a roof over his head and some food?

At the outlet stores I've had the " I ran out of gas and forgot my credit card" scam tried on me by a man and women carrying a brand new 1 gallon gas can. I truthfully told them I did not carry cash. They looked like they did LOTS of drugs.

When I used to drive a truck years ago. I've had the same guy hit me up the same day in different sections of Phila.. Very rare to see that down here.

Pete--I've seen panhandlers at the outlets too.....saw one just a couple weeks ago (not this guy). I see people begging for money quite often when I'm up that way in Rehoboth/Lewes--has become too common for my comfort level. I avoid beggars given they always look like drug addicts. I won't give anybody any money anyway...no way, no how.

I used to like Rehoboth a lot. Now it is just another run down tourist trap with zero charm. To me it is just an extension of the tacky Jersey shore towns. I still really like Bethany Beach because you can actually relax there. Maybe I am older now and the bars and action of the Rehoboth boardwalk don't excite me at all.

I will admit that the past few years I have vacationed in the OBX and stop in Rehoboth on my way home for the day. My kids actually asked to not go this year so we went to Dover for the day instead.

My husband just informed me that this man was just released from prison about two weeks ago, and he has an extensive criminal record. This guy is very violent and takes the panhandling to a whole new level (uses force)...be glad he's off the street! He is a menace to society.

I can't see how you can fairly call Rehoboth "run down...with zero charm". I don't find that an accurate assessment of the town at all. I agree that there can be some scummy looking characters on the boardwalk - usually late teens or twenties trailer trash types - but the town has some great shops (primarily on Baltimore Ave), some excellent restaurants, a few bars that we enjoy, and some good hotels (the Bellmoor being really good, if quite pricey during high season). I find it preferable to stay away between late June and Labor Day, and to avoid holiday weekends there generally. The town looks clean and fresh in the earlier Spring, and the Autumn light on the Atlantic and the dunes is beautiful -- there's something about the beach and ocean in Autumn that is very appealing.

We, too, enjoy Rehoboth Beach those times of years. That's when the place has been cleaned up, and the crowds are gone. I wonder if they still have that group of people Labor Day Weekend, outside Rehoboth Beach, on Rt. 1 - along the north bound lane, with their signs up, saying "goodbye"? Yes, I know tourists bring money, but........
