My husband wants us to start hiking on the weekends, which I think is a great idea; however we have 3 kids - ages 14, 7 and 9 months. Obviously with kids these ages we won't exactly be tackling the more difficult trails. Since we've only been here a year, I'm not really familiar with where the best places to go - and especially for the age range we'd be taking with us. Suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Lookout Mountain - has a nice little nature center the kids would enjoy and a loop trail through a meadow nearby.

Green Mountain - multiple trails of varying length.

Mayhem Gulch trailhead - parking lot along Rt 6 between Golden and Black Hawk - a bit more strenuous, but nice views of Clear Creek along the way (on weekends, they have an odd/even date system for hiking vs. mountain biking use of the trails.)

Waterton Canyon (Follow Wadsworth Blvd south from C470 to just before the Lockheed Martin facility) is a great/easy hike. It is actually a water department access road that is next to the South Platte River. There is an onsite parking lot, you would be in the mountains, there are a lot of tables and areas to rest, it is a gradual uphill hike, and the hike back to your car is completely downhill. You could even take a stroller.

You have to hurry though, they are going to start some construction out there Aug. 2 and the trail will be closed until Jan. 1, 2012.

If you live here in town, head out to Bluff Lake Nature Center - between Stapleton and Fitzsimons - for a short morning or evening hike. It's a beautiful little spot run by a nonprofit organization. They have something like 2 miles of trails, and some great programs for families.

Check them out at Bluff Lake Nature Center.

With kids that age, make sure to try Geocaching. There are hundreds throughout CO and it gives the kids something to work towards (instead of thinking about being tired or hungry or hot or...). We've found so many cool trails and vistas by seeking out different caches!

If you're looking for easy hikes with kids in the Denver area, there is an excellent new iPhone app (and guide book):
