I worked in Broomfield and lived in Speer which is about 10-15 minutes from DTC. Average commute time was about 35 minutes, so IMHO not that bad at all. It was mostly highway driving and only a few areas of bottleneck traffic mostly around the I-25 interchange going home.

You might want to consider living near an RTD station as I believe light rails go into DTC. If you were to do that, then Downtown would be an option. Littleton is also close to DTC.
I was actually looking at some apartments in the Speer/Wash Park area. Is it generally safe?

If you find a place near Arapahoe road, your daily commute will be very reasonable and your Boulder commute tolerable.
