ok, so I like the pods idea. But omg we have some heavy stuff and my back can't take it.

This is probably the hardest part of moving.
I know a lot of people post ads on craigslist under the general labor section when they need help loading a moving truck/PODS. It's one of the ways I used to earn extra cash on weekends. If you decide to go that route, I'd recommend trying to choose the college kids that contact you... otherwise you might end up with some interesting characters. Make sure you have everything boxed up completely before you have them come over then... it'll save you on the hourly $ and it's harder for anyone to steal a box than it is to steal lose items laying around. I think most people are honest, but go with your gut if you do.

Zion: Good advice for here, but since we are moving across the country to a city much bigger than here, I wouldn't know what to do once we got there! I won't write it off, but I think for us movers would be best.

Try Bekins movers. When we moved out here (granted 19 yrs ago), they had a deal where you packed your own stuff and they packed it into the truck, moved and stored it. That cost us about $3000 those many years ago, from Albany NY. We moved a four-bedroom houseful of "stuff".

WTS: we are trying to help the OP, not you. I'm going to slip the drivers a couple Benjamins to make sure your rental truck never actually leaves the state.
