The balconies extend over the sidewalk due to an interpretation of the city's cornices laws giving the illusion that the building is twisting slightly.

VE will eliminate that before they get to permitting.

They have some weird cut and paste things going on too. Look at the windows in the side view, the overlap each other, or if the front windows are cantilevered out, then they are all partial windows cut off at an angle. It will not be built that way. They are just trying to get some excitement about it going. It would be neat to have some sort of optical illusion building, but I suspect it will be a standard box when it is built.

A New Hotel is coming to Midtown

Upscale retailer to open boutique hotel in Detroit's Midtown

"Furniture and home décor retailer West Elm announced plans Monday to open a hotel in Detroit and four other cities as it branches out into the hospitality business."

"The planned 120-room boutique hotel in Detroit would open in 2018 and be built in Midtown at the northeast corner of Cass and Canfield on what is now a Wayne State University-owned parking lot."

"Companies like Shinola and West Elm represent the newest attempts at "line extension" by fashionable retail brands to open their own hotels, said Ken Nisch, chairman of Southfield-based retail design firm JGA"

This is great news. Midtown could use a hotel.

A new mixed-used development in the New Center area is closer to being a reality

http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article...tate-financing

"The Michigan Strategic Fund board on Tuesday approved a $2 million performance-based loan for developer Peter Cummings' $54.6 million new residential project in New Center area.

Third & Grand LLC is expected to bring 231 apartments totaling 190,000 square feet and about 20,000 square feet of commercial space to a 1.4 acre surface parking lot previously owned by Henry Ford Health System at West Grand Boulevard and Third Avenue."

There is also speculation that a Restoration Hardware could coming to the Albert Kahn building in the New Center Area.

Detroit's New Center may get a Restoration Hardware

"And discussions have been ongoing between the buildings' owners and Restoration Hardware, the high-end home furnishings retailer, about the possibility of putting a Restoration Hardware in the Kahn's ground floor, although no deals are signed."

"If Restoration Hardware or another retailer does open in New Center in the Albert Kahn Building, the architecture firm Albert Kahn Associates might then relocate its offices to the building's second floor, leaving the upper levels for new residential. The Kahn firm currently occupies the first floor and part of the second floor."

This is great. New Center has a cool name but there is not much there. Some offices, some residences and the Fisher Theater. Otherwise, no real reason to go there (a slight exaggeration, but more or less accurate). It will be good to see it become viable as a third center of life for the City.

Motown Museum plans $50M expansion

I'm excised for this. I've been wanting them to do something bigger with Motown for a while.
