Union head says it's 'not possible' to eliminate positions from bloated city entity.

Despite having no horses, the water and sewerage department for the city of Detroit employs a horseshoer.

Yet even with a department so bloated that it has a horseshoer and no horses, the local union president said it is "not possible" to eliminate positions.

That is nuts. They need to get out there and buy some horses. What kind of agency has a horseshoer and no horses?

Wow! That bit of information is the sort of thing that should end up circulating nationally.

It is my understanding they just keep the title so they can keep the position. The guy is a welder and repairs equipment. He does not sit around waiting for a horse to show up. I would be willing to bet he has no idea how to put shoes on a horse.

But remember, the city still has many jackasses that need shoes.

The predictable response from the union president will pretty ensure that they will not be invited to give an opinion at the slash and burn party. Even a semblance of a reasonable stance would have served his members better. Asking for even more employees is asinine.

Knowing unions - especially city unions, that is highly unlikely. If the job description says one thing, you can bet the person will not be doing much else. I can't tell you homw many times I have heard "That is not part of my job description" when I worked with some people.

Knowing Detroit, I would bet the guy does sit around and wait for a horse to show up.

FTA:
The horseshoer’s job description is "to shoe horses and to do general blacksmith work … and to perform related work as required." The description was last updated in 1967

Seems easy enough to fix. Sell the water department trucks and replace them with horse drawn wagons. That would also require additional horseshoers and provide some much needed skilled jobs for Detroit.

It would also cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and undoubtedly qualify for federal fudning. Seems like a win win win.

However they really need to start calling them farriers. "Horseshoer" makes them sound ignorant.
