My dad had to have a quadruple bypass at the age of 60. Diabetes and high BP run in my family. When he had his surgery, it was like a brick to the face for me. I saw his struggle.
I was in college at the time and joined a conditioning class. Over 8 weeks I lost 15 lbs. Over the next 6 months or so I had lost a total of 40. I cut out all fast food and sodas. I did this all only by walking - no running or weight lifting - so those of you who believe walking is not an effective exercise, I am proof that it can be.
I agree, and if you are like me and don't like walking outside. All you need to do is only 20-30 minutes of interval training on a treadmill. I only do it two to three times a week, weight training three times a week on alternate days, no more than 50 pound dumbbells, and I am really toned now, and still maintaining my weight.
Somewhere along the line the word "diet" has gained a negative image. Anyone who eats is on a diet. Diet is simply the collective food we ingest. Cows are on a diet of grass and grains, horses - hay and oats, etc. It doesn't mean eating to loose weight, gain weight or maintain weight - it simply is what it is - what we eat.
Diet is like breathing. You can't stop (without dire consequences) so don't ever say you're not going on a diet - you ARE on a diet, 24/7. The question is on the makeup of your diet.
Whole grains, lean red meats, fish and poultry, fruit, fresh vegetables (raw or lightly steamed) and low-fat dairy products are the goal. Serving size is the secret. Notice - sugar isn't on the list.

You are so right. What an aha moment for me from reading your post. I am on a healthier diet where I literally watch what I put into my body. White bread, pasta, white rice, sodas, and fast foods, are all foods that are not part of my daily diet any more.
