Whatever floats yer boat. Finding what works for you is the key. The real test is if it can be a lifestyle change and not an ends to a means.
Personally I have no desire to deprive myself of anything so I don't. I have just found the right balance of foods to make it work for me.
This type of intermittent fasting is not going to be for everyone. I am sure the failure rate is very high.

BP
On fast days I'm doing a can of sardines and 3 eggs (2 with yolk) so that's 48g of protein which considering the calorie restriction is a pretty high yield.

I am challenging my wife for more cooking ideas as one can only eat so much bok choi
Looking to go tofu route and I sashimi for my next day of fast.

Also, I'm regularly not a tea person BUT I'm starting to LOVE the stuff. Good organic green tea..yummy.
And even my skim lattes that I used to get with caramel drizzle, I'm now omitting the drizzle and they taste great.

My wife is having the harder time with the adjustment simply because she's constantly around food (chef and mom of 3). She always eats well and healthy but she's used to always tasting the food prior to serving, even for our kids at home. So you can pick up the calories quite quickly. She's committed though as am I. We're
at least giving it until Mid May and review our results.

Of course it rarely does. In my case it led to the opposite - a more nuanced sense of foods flavor and the tendency to be satisfied more readily than before. Non-IFers often assume extreme eating to be the case, maybe out of fear, but more likely out of ignorance.
If it was just running or lo intensity workout I could deal without eating. But my kettleball classes are always intense. Feel darn good afterward and I'm seeing results from the class but while in the midst of it all I would easily pass out without eating a little something previous.

Fasting means - you're not eating.

If you are trying to figure out how much protein to get on fast days, then you're not fasting.

A can of sardines and 3 eggwhites with 2 yolks is not fasting. It's eating.

If this 5:2 consists of "eating normal but healthy foods some days every week, then eating a lot less of it other days every week," then that's not intermittent fasting at all. It's just another fad diet.

RESOURCES

I wanted to share a few resources on the 5:2 diet for those intellectually curious and who are serious about learning the science behind this diet.

Good forum here for those who are looking for something better moderated: The 5:2 Fast Diet Forums

Interview of Dr. Krista Varaday, who did a recent human study on intermittent fasting. Dr. Krista Varady Interview

Transcript of interview with Dr. Michael Mosle: Dr. Michael Mosley: "The Fast Diet" (This one is very good as Mosley talks about some of the current research underway on IF.

Doctors come up with diets all the time. It is nothing new. Being a doctor is not reason to buy into their diet. You could look up all the Doctor written diets and all the science behind each and every one of them and most of it would be conflicting. This diet is not 'the' answer. That is not to say it doesn't work for some people, I am sure it does. All these diets work for some people, but none of them work for all people. Frankly, any diet that asks a person to fast for a few days a week is going to fail. I am sure in a few years no one will even remember this diet.

I completely agree....not fasting and definitely a fad diet. Just eat good whole foods in modest proportions, limit bread, greatly limit sugar intake and exercise - simple.

I hear quite often here, especially from one certain poster, that someone's lack of medical qualifications is reason to dismiss everything he says out of hand. So, which is it?

Its neither. How about plain old common sense when it comes to eating? I know its a boring concept, but really, its what works.
