This headline made front page news for about 5 minutes on 1-17-2011. I thought this story deserved more attention than that.
At one time, Jeff Fortin owned 3 kennels in Colorado. Two are now closed. The only one remaining has been in operation since 1960. Because of this recent news story about the 1,200 dogs in his care that had to be PTS, people are now going to hold a candle light vigil at that one remaining store in protest.
Public outcry is basically labeling him a "puppy mill". But he is/was a licensed dog breeder in Kansas. And the state will give him back his license if/when he cleans up his KS facility. What is the difference now that he surrendered his license?

It would seem there would be some way to petition the KS-AG and Sec. of State to keep from issuing a license to do this kind of business in Kansas whether he meets the KSDA requirements of cleaning-up his breeding mill or not. Clearly his history of violations proves he should not be licensed to breed dogs or any other animals.

Stories like this one make me so sad... it's unbelievable to me that anyone would allow this person to (legally) breed and sell ever again .

These low life folks state hop. Once they are shut down in one state they move to another state to start over in their "business" all over again. We've seen it too many times here in Oklahoma. Many states you don't have to have a license and many of these folks conduct their business under the table w/brokers, pet stores, newspapers, selling on street corners, Craigslist, etc.
Several years ago, a big story comes to mind of a quote breeder of Am Bull Terriers who was shut down in Kansas and then accidentally discovered by some hunters that he was horribly neglecting these dogs at his new breeding facility in Oklahoma. The dogs didn't have adequate food or housing and were chained to posts in the harsh winter. Many of the 80+ dogs were saved, although some have to be euthanized.

That would seem to fall in line with the story about two other of his facilities already having been shut down. Seems to fit the pattern. Sounds like an information gap between states, their Ag. Departments, and perhaps law enforcement?
This is just horrifying. I had no idea that there were puppy mills so huge, like factory farms. No way should this be legal.
we just had a mill family in this area sell off all of their "stock" back in November or December.... not too long after Prop B passed.... I heard from reliable sources that it was 800++ dogs.... i heard from other reliable sources that it was over 1,000 dogs..... all "cared for" by an elderly couple and their daughter and whoever they could find to work there for minimum wage......
and man oh man .... the restrictions they had for people wanting to come in and bid on the auction days... no cameras or other recording devices, id checked at the gate... etc. etc. ..... i'm guessing that the fact that they were exposed as a mill on a st. louis area news station a few months before that had something to do with their paranoia....
A friend in IN pulled 8 of those dogs out of there. She said they have classic puppy mill issues. Spinning in circles for hours, fear of not being confined, eating their own waste, totally unsocialized, etc. She had to spend over $1000 to get them out of there and is now spending hundreds on additional medical bills and still has to train them and socialize them before finding them homes. She'll lose a fortune on them but she couldn't stand the thought of allowing the Amish guy there buying them, knowing they'd just go back to the same fate they came from. Humans suck. I must say that a dozen times a day.
there was a surge of mills and byb's selling and just dumping their stock last fall.... around the time prop b passed.... guess its easier to just dump and run then to provide minimally humane conditions for the dogs on whose reproductive organs you support yourself.... .... in any case, THAT seems to have slowed down in recent weeks....
that elderly couple was claiming on their website that they were closing up shop because she has cancer and can't care for the dogs the way she wanted to anymore.....
