Right now i live in South Texas, and summers here are brutally hot. And this summer has been unusually rainy. The other day, for the first time, I opened it up to dispose of poop and the inside of the lid, and the sides of the trashbags had teeny pale yellow kinda worm bugs (maybe maggots?). it grossed me out so bad. i immediately put rubber gloves on, dragged the trashcan to the dumpster, hosed it off, sprayed a bunch of insect repellent spray on the inside of the trashcan and lid, and put a fresh bag in it and put it back in the yard.
Has anyone experienced this before? Any hints to avoid this? I am going to start putting the poop in a small plastic bag and tying it, and THEN putting it into the huge trashcan. Also continue to spray it with insect repellent/insecticide.
Also, what do yall do with doggy poop in your backyards? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but I would like to know how yall dispose of it?
We live in Central Florida (on the east coast of Fla) and it also gets pretty hot here and it's extremely humid! Lately it has been storming alot as well. It's funny you brought this up because the same thing happened to us the other day! My husband went to take the trash out and when he came back in he told me that one of the trash bags had a rip in it and he could see maggots in it! We have two of the big outside trash cans sitting outside next to our garage. They have lids on them, but it's not anything great. They are just normal outside trash cans from wallmart. The bag that had the maggots in it had only been in the trash can for a couple days and the lid was on the trash can the whole time. It has been raining for the last three or four days and of course it's been hot, but nothing was really any different from normal and we have never noticed anything like this before!

As far as the dog poop, we pick it up with the pooper-scooper and we put it in the pooper-scooper bags, we tie off the little bags and we throw them in a small trash can that we have outside for the dog poop baggies. At the end of the day we take the small trash bag (well, it's normally just a plastic grocery bag) out of the small trash can, then we tie it and put it in the big trash can out by the garage.

The above is pretty much what we do.

Wouldn't the maggoty things just be fly larvae? A fly probably laid eggs on the poop, then the larvae grew.

We looked into the Doggie Dooley, but other mastiff owners said that it just couldn't deal with large amounts of mastiff poop. Now that we are down to one dog, I might consider it again.

We scoop onto newspaper, then wrap/roll it up & put into little shopping bag.

The newspaper really helps.

We had the doggie doolie thing too and ended up selling it. We have two Masiffs and it would probably fill up too fast. We just scoop and put in plastic bag and dump it into the neighbors can.

I use the plastic supermarket bags, or buy the sandwich baggies to pick it up with.
Then til trash day which is 2 times per week i put it into a white garbage bag which is in the garage. I had as you 2 small dogs, therefore they don't do too much. i also live in a warm climate, but when i was up north in the summer i would see these bugs also.
there we had to go to the dump which was maybe once a week. try the baggies. i also
would clean out the outdoor trash can in the summer with lestoil and the hose. the brick is also good or get a can strap to hold the cover on from night critters.

Those are maggots for sure. Empty the bag more often, use a smaller can since the other would be overkill and use lime. Get some lime powder and toss it on top after each poop pick-up.

This triggered an idea to market something.

The zapper: Just spray it and it dissolves into thin air.

All joking aside. Don't most people just bury it?

I also thought of hurling it into the pond or a neighbor's yard. Just kidding. Don't want to kill fish....

I live in North Texas and it gets hot here too. I go out once a week and pick everything up. I put it in a plastic bag and then get rid of it in the alley. That way nothing can get in and there is no terrible smell. Having a big backyard and four dogs it can be a mess.

It's already been invented - it's called the "Vapoorizer" .

(In case I'm the only Jack Black fan here - is that even possible? - Jack Black's character in "Envy" becomes incredibly rich by inventing the Vapoorizer......cute movie )

But yes, TitaniumMD, if you could invent a poo zapper in "real life", sign me up now for a lifetime supply !
