I am just stunned. Losing a beloved pet is bad enough, but to have it happen so suddenly, without much time to prepare yourself, is even harder. I'm very, very sorry.

So very sorry for you loss. Rio was a beautiful dog and I am sure this has left a huge hole in your heart. I do hope time and memories can help heal your heart.

Did she have Autoimmune hemolytic anemia ? I have a friend that just lost a dog to that and I think she said the vet said it is 3X more common in females.( we females seem to get left out of the good things but when it comes to bad things we seem to have a higher risk so unfair!)

Rio was a beautiful dog. May she RIP.

Thank you all so much.

Yes. She had AIHA. Even with the transfusion, they feel she worsened from a blood clot.

Do you ever stop crying?

I know. Each time I've lost one of my dogs, I think I've cried for two solid days. Then gradually the pain softened. You always miss them, but eventually you remember mostly the good times. On rare occasions, something makes me think about their last days, and it can still make me go into a funk for a little while. Maybe we have to let ourselves feel that again at times so we realize how precious our pets are, and remember to appreciate the little things while we have them.
That's what I like about this forum, besides the things we can learn from each other. We all enjoy hearing about these little things and celebrating them, and we share our sadness when something like this happens. It lightens the burden just a little bit to know others feel the same way.

Stan, my dog was one of the lucky ones and lived through AIHA....I know your pain, your heartbreak, your panic when your beloved Rio suddenly became so terribly ill.

I will light a candle for Rio tonight to help her on her way to her next journey. Peace to you and your family. You will stop crying one day - but tears are a way of showing the deep emotion, devotion and caring you and yours have for Rio. Without tears we might not be able to separate the things we truly love from those we simply care about.

Honor Rio - plant a tree, say a prayer, look at the stars. They are always with us - always - wait for her and you will feel her with you.

Peace.
