How sales taxes destroy commerce, depress property values, create "tax wedges", discourage business creation, encourage monopoly, and impoverish communities. Saving Communities

Better to eliminate them, not property taxes. California's Prop 13 caused it to have low property taxes with very high sales (and income) taxes. This is the root of its current problems and why it has become unaffordable.

They're going to start their argument with malls?

Weak.

This is another argument intended to shift the tax burden to the working class instead of the consumer. I spend little, so I pay little tax. You want to eliminate it to save those who spend a lot, and spread the revenue loss on to my property tax is insane. Don't the 1% have enough already?

People have to live somewhere, and if they choose to buy a house the property tax is already way too much. They can choose whether or not to pay sales tax and buy a large screen TV, new car, furniture, boat, cell phone or Ipad. Oregon has no sales tax and yet they have the same problems with impoverish communities and the homeless as every other state.

The working class is hurt more by sales taxes than any other form of tax.

No, they are hurt by property tax more than anything else; not paying property tax can result in someone being homeless, property tax is the only tax that does not depend on someone's ability to pay.

For renters, there is more burden on renters as they are not passed on the homestead exemptions homeowners get to have.

If I get a ballot where I had to choose which tax (sales, property, or income) to increase and the projected revenues are roughly equal, I'd pick sales tax.. actually, I prefer NO TAX but if that's not an option, sales tax is the lesser evil. At least my modest spending won't cause my expenses to increase more drastically and I can always splurge on an overseas vacation where I'll be paying 0 sales tax to the locals.

Low property taxes encourage speculation and bubbles, which makes housing unaffordable for the poor and working class. Sales tax discourages business transactions and kills jobs.

In an ideal system I'd jack property taxes up to the skies and eliminate all other taxation.

Low property taxes keep prices down so people can afford homes, and create construction jobs. Sales tax gets money from those who can afford to spend.

I'd increase sales tax and add $1 per gallon to the gas tax, because I drive very little.

Rents do not always exceed the cost of buying including the exemptions. Sales taxes are regressive by nature and your amount of property taxes can be controlled to done degree by where you live and the value of said property
