The Republicans are largely driven by the agenda of religious bigots who dislike gay people.
More lies and fear-mongering.
Most people against gay marriage are for one or more of the following reasons, not because of hate:
- believe marriage isn't a right
- see there is not yet sufficient proof that being gay is all genetic, which means it is not like race or gender and thus not a civil rights issue
Here's my proposal to those who want gay marriage legalized nationwide: do it and be prepared for more unconventional (but not new) unions to follow. We'll just REGRESS (yes regress, not progress) to ancient Rome, where homosexuality, polygamy, and even man-child sexual relations were acceptable, even encouraged. And remember what happened to ancient Rome.
There are a lot of conservative gay people out there that would vote Republican if it wasn't for the gay marriage issue. Once gay marriage has been legalized nationwide and is no longer a hot political issue, the gay vote is likely to split with more supporting Republicans than do now. I do think though that gay issues are a wedge issue used by both sides to court votes and whats going to happen is going to happen no matter who is in the White House.
Romney's pride in opposition to equal rights tells people who are paying attention a lot more about the man than his business credentials... certainly more than enough to know he's not cut from a modern-day presidential cloth.
I think it is not news that some people think that others are insignificant, and an amazing number of them seem to become Republicans. I remember when the Republican party stood for free enterprise, opportunity, and the right to pursue personal happiness. Now it seems the Party has come to stand for oppression, barriers to entry, and privilege.
I commend you for standing up for the personal freedom that this country used to stand for, and support your cause. I personally am not lesbian, but I support anyone's right to be who they are so long as they do no harm to another.

1. Many of us believe Marriage Equality IS a civil right. Civil marriages are a civil right.
2. Civil rights laws and civil rights issues have come into being to counter bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination. It has nothing to do with genetics. For example, civil rights laws in the US protect citizens not only because of their race or skin color ... but for things like religion, nationality, marital status, as well as sexual orientation. Much of the history of civil rights in the US - although overshadowed by the African-American struggle to overcome slavery, the Jim Crow laws, inequality in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries - had to do with groups like the Irish (based on their nationality, which is not genetic) or Jews (which is based on their religious beliefs, which is also not genetic).
3. Your "slippery slope" arguments are bogus. In the dozen other countries where Marriage Equality has been won, like Canada, Spain, Argentina, South Africa, Netherlands, Norway, etc., nowhere has it become legal for a woman to marry her poodle or for Grandpa allowed to marry a baby.
4. The fall of Rome was due to it's becoming Christian. Gay people had nothing to do with the fall of Rome.
To hell with the economy, welcome a socialist society and soverignity handed over to the UN. So what if the president is is liar and shows zero leadership..... what do i care, I got mine!

There were a multitude of reasons, and anyone who does the research will see that. Christianity, if anything, brought civility and morality to the culture.
As to your earlier claims on what is or isn't a civil right, we'll have to agree to disagree. My point was, the disagreement doesn't come from a place of hate.
It seems to me that the majority of gay people, as a minority in the US like African-Americans, Asians, Jews, etc., have always leaned towards the Democratic Party in presidential elections.

I know exactly where you are coming from and what you mean, but I don't think this should be an issue when voting for President. I also think Obama came out supporting gay marriage to try and save his campaign, just like the illegal issue. i do know a lot of gay people that are saying somewhat the same as you, I also know a lot that do not plan on even voting this November. I just find it so hard to think people let one issue control who they may or may not vote for.
Most everyone knows my view on same sex marriage, I am 100% supportive of legal unions, but not for the actually gay marriage. I also realize 20 years from now, maybe even 10 this will not be an issue as gay marriage will be recognized everywhere. Heck, maybe it should just be totally legalized and leave it up to religious clergy whether or not they want to perform same sex marriage. That would solve this problem once and for all. It would no longer be an issue.
The fact that gay people have to deal with semantics between a humanistic view of "equal rights," and people who argue the definition based on an ill-understood use of wording is sad, but, nonetheless, good for the future. Young people don't care about this gay issue. So, if Christianity wants to evolve with the rest of us, then it can and could be nice, otherwise, it'll all just go down in the history books next to Indian Removal and slavery. Then, eventually, it'll become silly mythology and lost in fairy tales.
This argument between man and man will be written right next to black man and white women; it should all be a non-issue.
