I have always suspected that he would. He can pull from ALL demographics and with Hillary as the Dem nominee, so many people just can't choke down the thought of voting for her so they'll either go Independent, GOP or go home. I would say with Trump as an Independent, he would pick up those votes.
At some point, we must break out of this two party system since it appears hopelessly corrupt.
I think that this is Trump's way of blackmailing the establishment, since they've been conniving to get rid of him (including trying to put together a super PAC to knock him outta the race). He's basically saying 'support me as the nominee, or I'll make sure your candidate loses by running as an independent'. The establishment also know that there's a likelihood that if that happens, many GOP voters will abandon them forever (since they're so disgusted with the establishment) and that Hillary might win the election.
He signed the agreement or pledge or whatever it was saying that he would support the Republican front runner and that he would be "loyal" to the Republican party or something like that. Of course, I didn't believe him then because I think he is a blatant liar and doesn't care who knows it - I think he actually thinks it's funny or cute.
Anyone voting for him should know exactly what they're getting at this point - and let's just say I'm very unimpressed.

my guess is that the vast majority of the votes will be pulled from the GOP candidate splitting the vote and causing both them and trump to lose but ... i'd love to see that scenario actually happen to see the exact breakdown of the numbers.
Trump wont run as independent because he would have to start working to get on the ballot in all 50 states by Feb 1, unless he really does just wants to destroy the GOP nominee at which point he could just get on say 25 of the state ballots and make the DEm nominee an easy winner.
Of course he hasn't ruled out running at an independent. Trump won't be held back by some piece of paper.
Personally, I'll be looking at Maine's Ranked Choice Voting initiative next year and see how it does. I'd be for anything that eliminates the stupid spoiler effect that ruins third party candidates' chances.
Then do it. Do it now. Don't take advantage of GOP monies and debates to promote yourself and screw the GOP nominee. Typical Donald, structure deals to use other people's money then screw them and leave them holding the bag.
