I'm going to say it actually helps Johnson the most because it gets his name out there when most people don't even know he exists.
He got more coverage today than any other campaign day since this all started. Actually was a strategy of Trump during the GOP Primaries - he would be in the news every day with outrageous comments.
The Libertarian Party was founded in 1971 & in 2012, Gary Johnson was their most successful candidate so far. The Libertarian Party is the 3rd largest party and the fastest growing party as well. This year they have at least several dozen running for Congress, and about 200 running for state, county & city positions. The complete list is at lp.org/candidates-16

I read multiple papers everyday. I wouldn't remember Aleppo either without a while to think about it. I don't consider Johnson a serious candidate, but not knowing this doesn't mean he isn't well informed.

Guilty as well. I tuned Syria out awhile ago. But I'm not running for office. He needed coaching by advisers. He doesn't have them, I'm guessing.
He does not think fast on his feet. He could have turned it into a positive by stating that he is more concerned with this country, jobs, government, etc.
Here's part of the transcript from the interview. Barnicle hit him with a "gotcha" question after talking about the Nader effect. It was clearly a question meant to trip up and "expose" Johnson as being uninformed
Quote:
BARNICLE: But do you worry about the Nader effect in 2000?
JOHNSON: I don’t worry one bit about it. I really do think that the two-party system is broken. I don’t think Democrats are able to balance a checkbook these days. That’s it’s all about bigger government and higher taxes. And then Republicans with, I think, the social agenda. Look, whatever your social inclinations are just don’t force it on me. And I think the Republican Party has gotten really extreme in that category.
BARNICLE: What would you do, if you were elected, about Aleppo?
JOHNSON: About?
BARNICLE: Aleppo.
JOHNSON: And what is Aleppo
