Every non-idiotic campaign does self-oppo research because every candidate has things about them in their history that will look bad. By identifying those things, the campaigns can at least be ready for them when and if they see the light of day, and thereby manage the narrative.

As someone here posted - Trump is repeatedly shooting himself in the foot, pausing only long enough to reload. Truer words have never been spoken. I really can understand why some GOP folks have claimed he's a Democratic party plant. I don't BELIEVE that's the case, but I wouldn't be overly surprised if it was.
