The is what I have seen as well. Almost every day of the week I eat lunch at the same restaurant (western Algarve), which in the summer has about 75-80% Spanish customers. The Portuguese and Brazilian staff seem to have very little problem understanding the Spanish; however, a good number of the Spanish really strain to understand the Portuguese language, while others seem to have only a little problem.

I have wondered if perhaps some regional Spanish accents (Galicia aside) might not have a closer similarity to Portuguese than others.

Not really, no similarity. I don't think that Galician is very similar either, but I'm not a Gallego speaker.

I have heard that language occasionally and it certainly does sound a bit more familiar to Portuguese ears. It is a bit like with the Portunhol spoken in Brazil's border regions.

You are seriously telling us this sounds like Spanish? No way in hell it does. This is Portugal Portuguese being spoken. Brazilian Portuguese doesn't sound any more similar to Spanish than Portugal's.
If you speak Spanish you should be able to pick up at least 60% of the conversation. The Brasilian portuguese has the south american accent, therefore it's probably easier for South Americans to understand as opposed to someone from central america. I speak Italian and Spanish and I can pick out at least 85% of the conversation. Portuguese does not sound like Russian!

One thing i can tell you about Portugal, we were already a nation almost 400 years before Spain was.We were the first Europeans to set sail and discover the new world,Spaniards,Italians,Dutch etc just followed in our footsteps.

Spaniards are arrogant, but not just towards the Portuguese, but towards everyone, that is why they are much less liked than we are. We also had the first, and longest lasting global empire, but they think they are still rulers of the world,we do not,we are much more humble.

Also when you say we are not sophisticated, that is a joke, just look at our traditional music,FADO,and then listen to Flamenco...you tell me which one seems more sophisticated...

Portugal as i said,is the oldest European nation state and have been united as a people ever since,Spain has Catalunha that is always crying for independence, the people from Galiza dont even like to say they are spanish, and their language sounds more portuguese than spanish...and im not even going to mention the Basque country, they even have terrorist independence from Spain fighter groups.

With that said...the Portuguese are a great people that had major impact on the world as we know it today, yet we never claim to be better than anyone"spaniards tend to do that" but we also never let anyone claim they are better than us.

Do the words "pot", "kettle" and "self-consciousness" mean anything to you?

But the Portuguese don't speak like in that video, it is a comedy program and he is trying to emulate someone.
Soap operas are much more realistic, e.g.:

Destinos Cruzados - Episódio 181 (2/2) - YouTube

But even they speak high Portuguese, which sounds clearer than what people speak on the streets, let alone in rural areas...

My Brazilian friend has a hard time following a conversation in European Portuguese.

No complaints or arguments about the content of your post. I actually quite like the Portuguese, quite a bit.

I just found it odd that 5 paragraphs of boasts, pride, etc., there is a humble reference to oneself.

Contradictory and undecided, torn between tugamania and inferiority complex - typical traits of the Portuguese...

Interesting to hear the differences. On a world scale though I'm sure the two are very similar.
