I'd say that Catalans speak better Spanish (Castilian) than most Spanish.

Catalan is a totally different language than Spanish(the real name is Castilian).

Not as different, both come from latin, too many words are similar and a Spanish native person who is not Catalan can understand Catalan.

Yeah, that's true. I'm Spanish (Castillian) native speaker and I can understand 90% of Catalan words.
