"In addition, a recent poll by the Levada Center, a research organization, suggested that 53 percent of respondents were opposed to a woman’s being president of Russia and 32 percent said no woman in Russia was currently fit for the job."
Why are people in Russia opposed to a woman running for president? Isn't it a well known fact that one of Russia's most prosperous times was under the reign of Catherine II? And the majority of the 1700s was ruled by female monarchs.
All together these female monarchs ruled for 67 years! Just 2 years shy of how long the soviet experiment lasted. Do average people who oppose a female president also think that this time period was lead by incompetent and weak leaders?
That poll was asked prior to Sobchak entering the race, so it was about women in general. Also Sobchak is a famous journalist in Russia and apparently very witty too, she was only known as the Paris Hilton in her younger years, she has matured since then. Though I have to admit I know very little about her personally, except that I first herd about her in song that Leningrad wrote recently.
Her soft porn images of her younger years are going to work against her now, not to mention her political background and who/what she represents...
This is the political analysis of what she might expect, what's her today's image vs former image, and what kind of crowd she might bring to the elections;
To make the long story short, a lot of women of certain demographic group that used to watch her popular reality show DOM -2 for 8 years or so back in the day, might be her major fans. And since the rumor has it that Putin would like to bring more people to elections, ( to make them look more legit may be?) Sobchak might bring that crowd in with her, once in presidential race.
Gives Putin legitimacy. Navalyi is no longer needed.

Do you think that Putin can be a not legitimate president?
Interesting idea. But predictable. A similar trick was made, for example, with Assad in Syria.

UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES he is a legitimate president.
But only under the circumstances, when the political field is sanitized long time ago.
But since he knows that political field is sanitized, he needs each and every election look legitimate in the eyes of the world.
And that's why presence of people like Navalny (and now Sobchak) play in his hands rather nicely.
Great conversation. I learn something new here every time.
"legit" as in a western-style election per se! I read somewhere that PRC was once looking at a one-party democratic system (Singapore). At the 19th Congress (2 days ago), Xi's opening speech mentioned about a democratic system. This thing can't be rushed or manipulated by foreign elements, all in good time when the time is right.

US does not disinfect the field? Can a person from street become President in US? No. It needs billions. Also the same thing, but with a different sauce.
Ok so they were lower middle class on Western European standards.
Stalin had only boots and a military tunic. Wealth is not measured only in dollars.
