Switzerland. Yeah, I can't imagine they'd talk about race. Why would they?

Over 75% of the population in Geneva doesnt even have swiss origin

35% of the population is foreign

Never been asked what race I am. To everyone else, I'm just white.

Never heard anyone in the UK say ''what race are you'' that would get some very odd looks if someone asked someone that.

Its normally ''where are you from'' if there not White and/or have an accent. You'd get that question a lot if your not White.

Because nobody in his/her right sense would ask for a "race", as we all know there is just one race, the human race. And though I like bashing the UK, I am confident that you know this as you are very civilised people.

But isn't dunno's dad Jamaican or something? He must be dark and handsome.

well try not looking white or black in the US

then you'll get what ethnicity or race are u?

it's simply denial to claim the US is not race obsessed because the rest of the world is also race obsessed..... in America it's almost a business there to promote racialism on the media!

even a supreme court justice says: AMERICANS IT'S ENOUGH!

It really is not accurate to generalize some areas are some are not. Some people are some are not there are over 300 million people living in the United States, so many different views.

I am not saying 300 million people are walking around all day thinking about race, but it is fairly common in america to use terms such as: The white guy from the store, that asian girl over there, I am friends with this black guy, that guy is half mexican-half white.... America labels WAY TO MUCH, that is a big part of the problem...

watch TV.... Tyra banks show topic (black women who date outside their race), (white men who only date asian women), etc. Or tv shows like sisters (black women talking about being black EVERY SINGLE DAMN EPISODE).... I even remember the controversy over some sitcom where there was an interracial couple....

disney (a princess named sofia from spain, creating a debate in america over why is she so white if she's supposed to be latino, then creating an extra debate over wether white spaniards should be latino or not) ONLY IN A SOCIETY FOCUSED ON RACE THIS KIND OF THINGS OCCUR

or the news.... a black man this, a white woman from michigan that.

America DOES have a nasty obsession with trying to label people by tidy racial classifications and skin colors, does that mean all americans are racist? NO.... does that mean Americans are on average very conscious about skin color and so on? YES

Re: " For instance, in America a lot of people say something like "I am Irish American" or "German American". I think it is kind of obsession. From my perspective they are just Americans. However I do not mind them calling themselves whatever they want"

Hat koszonom szepen Jiri! ....;-).....En it vagyok Amerikai orszagon. I can go on in my ancestral language (magyar) but it's just to indicate that I was 'born and raised' in a European household within American society.

I did get a 'dual' approach in my upbringing and as far as myself I don't think I have that particular obsession you noted. But I do know in a way I always live and think in 'two' places. For me , as probably for others, that hyphenization is really a sort of respect for 'roots'. Being here one can easily get loosened from them. And I don't that's the way to go in my opinion.

I see what you are saying athough many times when I have heard those types of things here it is usually used to be more descriptive generally without any value attributed to it. Kind of like to paint of more clear picture of how what the person looks like. I mean we also see the differences what's wrong with talking about it ocasionally as long as it is respectful.
