ovchipkaart-the public transport metrocard. get her to get a personal one; there is a charge. then you can get subscriptions such as an ov bike at any trainstop, as long as they dont run out of course. or discounts on weekends. other stuff too https://www.ov-chipkaart.nl/home.htm
ah has a bonuscard too. once she has her pinpas she can shop with a gun and ring up her stuff as she goes and then you just go to a machine and check out. like a baas.
Yes, they have basically every little things you need in and around the house and you can buy a sh*tload of stuff and still only pay like 20 euros. But don't expect it to last a long time
I'm so glad the US is behind the times, with the move toward "cashless societies".
At some Ikea's (i believe in A'dam too) they even have a few rows where there's no person at the counter to help you. You can just scan your own stuff and pay by PIN card.
thanks for all the good advice! she has been to action before for all kinds of things. she hasn't seen bags for bikes though.
Ikea charlotte had self check out lines as well, but got rid of them after two years. don't know why, maybe too efficient
and yes, she can park her bike underneath her building and we bought her a good looking, but used one.
apparently, the lock is one of the bigger investments, but the seller did recommend not to buy it at action.

Netherlands version of Amazon is https://www.bol.com/nl/index.html. It's all in Dutch. Download google chrome and it can translate web pages for you. The other Amazon link only has books.
Alternatively you can look at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk and see what's cheaper. Beware of shipping costs!
Blokker, HEMA, mediamarkt and IKEA will become your best friends. Almost everything can be found in these stores. Also look at Action and Xenos.
You can find bike stores all over - they will have the saddle bags. You can find them in Xenos as well, but not sure if the quality.
Make shure she doesn't leave the bike outside on the street at night. Take it inside, otherwise it'll be stolen. Buy the cheapest bags (fietstassen) you can find. The Action has them for like € 5,00.
I would put a front rack, looks like a milk crate, on the front of her bike, and throw her stuff in there ...
