I have recently joined a gym and decided to regularly do some cardio, I like to, at least once a day, do an hour on the treadmill at a 4.0 incline with the speed of 4.5, I end with a 10 minute run at a speed of 6.0.
Well a gym "trainer" walked up to me and said you are doing the worst thing, he said you are just burning muscle. I was so angry at him for interrupting my workout in such a rude way that I just ignored him.
Am I wasting my time with doing this work out?
I would really appreciate all feedback. Thank you in advance.
Stength training is important to any workout, and has the ability to increase your metabolic health. Cardio is an excellent way to burn through fat in the muscle tissue. Too much though, without proper nutrition, can hurt overall muscle development and/or existing muscle tissue. That is why strength training is also recommended along with a proper nutrition/diet is needed.
Way to go for your journey in this lifestyle change!

You seem very arrogant to me, the way you put the word trainer in quotes and ignored him. If it weren't for your ego, you could have simply answered, "What would you suggest?" and heard some free advice. Maybe it would have been good, or maybe it would have been bad, but you could have heard it. You could have told him your goals and heard his opinion on those too.
No one here knows what you look like, we don't know your physical condition, we don't know how you run. Why would you prefer an assessment from random strangers on the internet over a real live person who watched you for an hour? To me, an hour and ten minutes on a treadmill sounds foolish. But I can only say that viewing my needs and goals. For all I know, you are training for a marathon, which would make my opinion dead wrong. That's all you can expect from internet advice based on limited information. If you think that is better than listening to a professional, you are making a mistake.

Could it be that as a gym employee/trainer, he knows who you are and read the file/application you completed upon joining and noticed you indicated that "building muscle" was one of your goals in joining a gym? Onglet is right in her post to you above.
A lot of times, the true conscientious trainer WILL know who is working out in their gym and they WILL read the person's application and take not of what they say is the primary goal in working out. Maybe you DID indicate that you wanted to build muscle (i.e., "tone") and he just recommended that maybe you should NOT go so much on cardio and should hit the weights instead.
No, you are NOT wasting your time running an hour on a treadmill. You're burning more calories and getting more cardio this way than the Elliptical. 4.5 is not really running though, this would be a fast walk, though the 4.0 incline is good. But it's good for a beginner!
Watch out for shin splints if you're not careful at that incline. Any trainer saying "you're doing the worst thing" is a Bozo. The "worst thing" would be sitting in front of the TV stuffing cheetos down your throat.
I personally wouldn't pay a trainer much mind if I had not met with the trainer and we had not discussed what my goals are or any of my personal health history.
Also, the use of quotes has me confused...was the "trainer" actually a gym employee (and, if so, was he, in fact a trainer, and not just the guy who monitors to make sure the machines are getting sprayed off with disinfectant), or was he just some random dude who uses the gym, but goes around dispensing advice? Either way, though, if he's not YOUR trainer and has no specific knowledge of you, I'd not really worry about what he has to say.
dang...trainers usually are misinformed about fitness. It's pretty hard to prove that you're burning muscle doing cardio, so I'd ignore such a statement.

BS. Running on a trendmill is cheating. The machine bounces whereas cement, grass, sand whatever ground does not. This is why you should also put it at .5 incline as well. I haven't ran on a trendmill in nearly a year.
