This American Life podcast. It's about an hour long so I know when I'm done and I can just put myself on automatic and zone out from the workout (as long as my heart rate stays in the target range).
If I am at the gym, lifting weights or doing any other type of exercise (besides running and swimming of course) I don't really pay attention to the music. I hear it but I'm not listening if that makes any sense. To stay motivated I write on my palm (with a marker) "Punk ass" so I get irritated and workout that much more. It helps me remind myself of how I used to be bullied and how everyone thought or thinks I can't achieve something. I can't have any devices on me, connected to my ear when I workout. It's just annoying to me and I hate having to adjust the ear piece if I end up in a position where it will get messy.
Now, if I am on the treadmill or running/jogging I listen to music. Listening to music when running or jogging helps me that much more. If I am working out at home, I have my own sound system so I can exercise without anything connected to me while I sweat.
The music I listen to ranges in variety. It's mostly electronic music, like Trance, industrial, hardstyle, or I listen to a lot of music from video games (Street Fighter,Tekken etc) or All Japan Pro Wrestling (Nerdy, I know!!), and even some metal, hardcore hip-hop. Anything that's going to pump me up and **** me off is what I listen to.
Here's an example, and if this doesn't get you excited to workout, then you're SCREWED:
Everyone I train I tell them to take their headphones out. . . creates a security blanket over a weak mind. When they have to overcome heavy weights... music will not help and their lack of mental fortitude collapses!
Metallica, Megadeth, Ozzy, Rob Zombie (Hillbilly Deluxe is a great workout album), Anthrax. It's aggressive high energy music that keeps me motivated. Yeah, I was a 80's teen, how can you tell?
If i listen to music its usually some upbeat rock like GNR or Garbage, but it usually gets drowned out by the sound of my heartbeat going 'BABOOM! BABOOM! BABOOM!" in my head.
If i listen to the radio i usually turn on my Iheartradio app and tune it to 104.7 WTUE. Best radio station ive found yet.
The same music I like to regularly listen to except only uptempo stuff. Rock, metal, dance, indie, alternative and pop are all good, I just put my ipod on shuffle and skip over anything slow.
