I know this has been the subject of numerous threads, but this myth/perception just will not die.
Take a look at this vid - whether you like or agree with CrossFit or not (I'm looking at you tommodonahue ) - these girls sling more weights than all the Treadmill Buffys at your local 24hr Fitness or whatever. They also look way better. Coincidence? Not hardly.
Continuing on our Olympic Weightlifting kick: One of the most common things I hear when women see a couple of guys lifting weights in a CrossFit workout at CrossFit 818 is "well I don't want to get big, I just want to get toned".
Ladies this post is for you! First, a couple things about women and muscles: Did you know that after the age of 30, the average woman loses almost a pound of muscle a year for the rest of their lives? The easiest way for women to ensure they avoid getting osteoporosis is to have enough lean muscle in order to stimulate the body to maintain the bone density to support that muscle. Women generally can't get big from lifting weights alone because they lack the levels of testosterone necessary to produce huge muscles. Those female bodybuilders look that way due to performance enhancing drugs (including steroids and testosterone). And finally, the most important reason why to include weightlifting in your daily regimen? Because it burns fat like nothing else!
Check out 53kg (117lb) German Olympian Julia Rohde below... while she didn't medal, she certainly lifted a lot of weight with an 85kg (187lb) Snatch and a 108kg (238lb) Clean & Jerk!
1) They look better becuase they're girls, girls who train just looks better it's a natural law.
2) If "treadmill buffies" only lift 75lbs in snatch they're not buff, most people with minimal amount of training experience would be able to do more in military press.
3) Crossfit sucks
4) If not obvious by now, this post should be completely disregarded...
what does lifting a barbell over ones head like that work out?
Between the thrusters and the rope climbs that looks like it would work out almost your whole body. I run four days/wk and lift three, and I try to include squats at least two workouts per week, but watching all those thrusters in that WOD makes me think that workout would kick my butt.
the rope climbs look fun...but I'm not sure I trust cross fit
What does that mean? If you think CrossFit isn't for you, no worries, it probably isn't. I'm just confused by the phrasing about "trusting it".
