I am 28 years old right now and I want to know generally speaking, at what age, does a woman's metabolism begin to slow down.
I've done some research online and it seems like women's metabolism slows down at age of 40.
1. I was a college water polo player who used to train on average 5-6 hours a day with combination of swimming, Aerobic exercise, light weight training, Training Drills, Water Polo Juggle (aka underwater combat)
I have dreamed of being an Olympic competitive swimmer.
Well, this is 8-9 years ago.
2. I am still in excellent shape because I still swim 2.5 hours and workout 1 hour a day.
However, I notice that I can no longer swim as fast as I used to. If I train 5-6 hours a day, I got really tired.
This makes me a little bit depressed.
My question is
Could it be that my metabolism slows down at age of 28?
Any advice from ex professional athletes would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I would assume it starts to slow down (or not run in optimal speed) at any age if one is not eating healthy and being active. But yeah, it does naturally slow down as we get older. Depends on the individual.
It starts to slow down after the body reaches full maturity. Life style, exercise, etc..can postpone it, but it will happen. It varies from person to person.
An example: for the swimmer. Once you reach the peak of achievement, you will start to slide back. With extra hard work, you can swim just as good for a longer period of time, but you will never be able to just get better and better. At some point, the muscles will be doing all they can. This can happen today or next month, but it is happening.
It's a process that starts earlier in some. Just as there is a difference in when you lost your first tooth. Bodies age differently.
Biggest hit comes at menopause due to the drop in Estrogen.
"Evidence suggests that estrogen hormone therapy increases a woman's resting metabolic rate. This might help slow weight gain. Lack of estrogen may also cause the body to use starches and glucose less effectively (insulin resistance), thus increasing fat storage and making it more difficult to lose weight."
Of course, taking Estrogen replacement is controversial to say the least. I can't remember if it's currently in or out, but either way an adjustment to diet and exercise can compensate quite nicely. I've never had a weight problem, but I discovered that after menopause I had to watch my diet even more closely and exercise a bit more to maintain my weight. 6 years post menopause, I actually weigh a few pounds less than I did prior and I take no hormones.
Training for 5 to 6 hours a day? Of course you are going to get tired. Are you in training for something specific or is this your normal routine? I would suggest you cut back on the time you are devoting to working out.
As we age we are normally going to start slowing down. At 28 you are at peak age for performance. I would imagine you will not have to worry about a slowing metabolism for quite some time. For me it was 40. But as I cleaned up my diet and up the intensity of my workouts I am better shape now than I have ever been in and I am 51. No menopause yet.
I did not see a dramatic change until after menopause, 53 years old. Father time is working hard to kick my butt but I continue to fight back!
The good news is that after menopause women also tend to need less sleep. Now we have more time for those additional workouts. Yay (said sarcastically).

I doubt seriously there's a one-size fits all answer to your question. Hormonal and body changes begin at birth and end at death. If you think your metabolism is "slowing" down - see you doctor for a complete physical. Outside of some medical issue - the solution to most medical questions is "eat clean and exercise".
