I meant socks, shorts & shirts too for that matter. There is a lot more variation with shoes.
If you go out and buy running shorts, shirts, or socks by new balance, addidas, nike, etc. The materials will be good and will function well. I have running shorts by North face, New Balance, and Addidas. I can't tell a difference as far as how well they breathe and how they feel. I like my North Face running shorts best, but that's only because of the pockets it has. They cost $35 on sale but I've had them over 5 years, and expect they will last another 10 years if not more.
as a marathon runner, I swear I've seen some people run almost naked in colder weather downwards of 20 degrees....the one thing they do always have is a synth. hat & gloves.

I recently picked up an Under Armour hoodie. Great material and is very comfortable in those conditions.

As Old Navy, Target and Athleta have sales, I'm trying to stock up on gear that wicks moisture and accommodates for cold/warm weather, and pants that fit well.
I run all winter in NY, temps are routinely in the 20s and 30s. No reason not to. Ran a race Thursday where the temps were in the 20s but with wind the feel was like 17. Running pants, long sleeve running shirt, gloves, ear warmer. I was fine.
I find the cold to be different in different parts of the country. A dry cold feels less cold than a damp cold. So it depends where you live. NY is a damp cold place. Ran at 28 degrees in Nevada in October in a T-shirt and capris. I wear gloves before long sleeves.
I never run in a hat and rarely a jacket unless there is some serious precip. The warmest I go is a vest over a long sleeve. I will run in cotton shirts in spring and fall. I just like the way it feels. But never cotton underwear-- always wicking.
I know that this is an old thread, but I live in Fairfax County VA, right outside of Washington DC. If that helps determine what should be worn while jogging in colder temperatures, I am all ears.
And since this started, I have jogged and walked, but only during the Spring, Summer, and Fall.
