Ok everybody fist off this is not intented to be exact math or science, it is just an estimate and it has to do with individual perception. In your gym about what percentage of people are actually training seriously vs the rest? In my gym for example I think maybe 30% of the members are actually training seriously, of that 30% maybe 10% are training real hard, the other 70% is pretty much doing mediocre training or as they say in the fitness industry "Simply Going Trough The Motions". What is your version?

Its a matter of perception. I see some 300+ pound women training seriously. I see some Triple H looking dudes goofing around. I can walk in and see a bunch of 40+ year old divorcee women with botox lips chatting up a storm and lounging about on some machines, then see them the next day seriously training their asses off. Its all a matter of perception.

Often times it IS the 300 pound woman who is the most serious in her training because maybe the doctor told her she will DIE soon and her 3 jerk ex boyfriends who are the baby daddys of her 3 kids will get custody if/when she dies. Maybe that motivation is more to her than say, the hot 110 pound Asian girl who physically looks the part, but kinda half asses it on the elliptical.

So you don't know who is serious or not serious based on their body types or what you see them doing on any given day at any given time at the gym. There is no way to answer this question unless you know those folks personally.

When I go to Bev Francis' Powerhouse, "Mecca of the East", where I go about once a month to see my friends, almost everyone is going for it. At my other two gyms (I belong to two inexpensive gyms), I'd say 80% are lifting with a purpose. I've been at gyms where probably as few as 20% of members were training with any thought at all.

You really have to have to be serious and have a goal to survive at my gym, Mini's House of Pain.

I go during off-peak hours, and I get the impression that the few people there generally mean business.

I think it also kinda depends on the gym you go to as well.

At Crossfit, 100% of the people there are working their tushies off. At Equinox, 50% are there just to look good with hopes that some agent, Hollywood type, or movie star sees them. The other 40% are there because they heard that its cool to be a member at Equinox and the last 10% are there working their butts off.
