I have never lifted weights. A couple of months ago I started doing push ups. For the fist month I just tried to increase the number that I can do Did them 6 days a week and gradually to 40 after a month. For the last month or two I have started doing sets, is that the right word, three times a week. Basically, something like 20, minute rest, 25, minute rest, 15, minute rest, 15, minute rest and 25. On 3 of the off days I do 35 pushups. The other day nothing. I like pushups cause they are quick and easy. So, I was thinking of replacing my routine of 35 a day on my "off days" with another exercise that is quick easy. I have some dumbells at home. A set of 10 lbs and a set of 20 lbs. What would you suggest?
Quick and easy? I could get snarky about that, but that would not be helpful. I'm in a helpful mood this morning. Check this out: Hundred Pushups. Follow that program to the letter. Also of much importance, is the 'Other Programs' link. I would do them all. FWIW.
You could try combining movements with your pushups. You can start standing then raise arms to touch ceiling then down to touch your toes then walk out on your hands or fists until you get to a push up position and do one then walk yourself back up until you are standing and repeat but this time do 2 pushups then 3 and so on until you can't do anymore.
Try to get yourself up to 8 pushups which means you are actually doing a total of 36 pushups.
You can add in a squat somewhere either before you go down to touch your toes or when you get back up from the pushup and if needed add some small weights.
This exercise uses many different groups of muscle and will actually get your heart pumping too.
Another idea is to get a pull up bar for a doorway.
Thanks for the replies. By quick and easy, I mean a 10-15 minutes and exercises that I understand. A push up is pretty simple.
I have actually been following the 100 push up plan but have been stuck for 4 or 5 weeks on week four. I just can't complete the last workout of the week which calls for 23, 28, 23, 23, 33. I did it all but the final 33. I could only complete 15. I am thinking I should rest more before trying the final 33.

You should be using those dumbbells more then doing push ups.
