Would you be less inclined to take classes with an exercise leader who has put on about 50 pounds over the past five years, not due to a medical issue, just the old 'got married and gained weight'?

I don't think that it would matter to me. Their knowledge/expertise is what I'm after. One of the most kick ass instructors at our gym is a bit overweight, though if someone is FIFTY POUNDS overweight, that hampers one's stamina I'd think, but that may not be the case if they're not a newb to the fitness world.

It's a good question. I mean, even the best pro golfers in the world have instructors that couldn't come close to beating them in golf, but it's the knowledge they have and their teaching ability that get them the job. So while this person may be overweight it likely does not mean they don't have the knowledge and ability to motivate people to get into shape.

Having said that, I guess to me I'd prefer to have someone teaching me who is at least in "good" shape and not 50lbs overweight. The fact that they stated they "got married" and gained weight sounds like an awful excuse. I would think if you just got married you'd have tried to get into the best shape of your life for your wedding. Weird.

The instructor got married about eight years and started putting on weight a few years later. She has probably put on 30 of those 50 pounds in the last two years. In most cases, she's the heaviest person in the room and it just doesn't look good.

Is this yoga or like some kind of zumba/heavy cardio class? I could maaaaaybe look the other way if it was a yoga instructor.

Is she a good instructor, though?

We work out with hand weights; do planks; squats; lunges; crunches, stuff like that. The extra weight is affecting her form; balance, and stamina. It's just not a good look to see a tubby exercise leader. Women who are in better shape than her show up once, and then don't return.

I take a lot of fitness classes. I've had a few chubby instructors over the years. And, I honestly have to say they don't motivate me as much as the "fit" ones. I guess it's a mental thing with me.

I agree. The leader shouldn't look in worse shape than the rest of the class.

It's like a dentist with rotten teeth, I wouldn't want to go there. You gotta be a role model.

You take a class to get fit, look fit, get in shape ... but if the instructor can't even accomplish it himself even though he teaches several classes per week ..... soo, how am I gonna achieve it???
