There is actually a guy on the path I run that walks his cat on a leash! I've never been tempted to stop for any of the dogs (way too many people walking dogs) but the guy with the cat....it's just so cute.
When I lived in a small town in Missouri and ran a lot I hardly ever saw other runners, but if I didn't I'd usually say hi or at least nod. Here, I go on a very popular running trail downtown with hundreds of other runners, so I'll nod at someone if we make eye contact, but thats it. However, one leg of the trail goes into the supposedly "rough" area of town (I think its fine), and has few runners, so I'll say hi if I meet someone on that portion.
I try to acknowledge pedestrians, bike riders, and runners. Sometimes they don't acknowledge back, most of the time they do. The hardest is when there is a car driving the neighborhood. It's harder to see if I know them or not. If I do, I wave. If I don't know them I don't usually wave.
I normally can't speak, but manage a smile or grunt and hand gesture. I don't normally entirely ignore people though, unless I'm going up a really hard hill or something.
I would love to be able to say hello and chat, but I can barely breath as it is!
A smile and a head bob to acknowledge other bikers/runners. I feel like we have our own exclusive clique so I try to acknowledge others with the same hobby as me.
I always smile or wave, about 50/50 if I get a response back. Whenever I run past a house whose owner is struggling with a dog on a leash, I always say give me the leash and I'll bring the dog for a run, and then return the dog ready for a nice nap. That always gets a response from the dog owner. Mostly a sarcastic, saying that would be great.
