Charley et al.....To assist with your recovery, check out a device known as the Chi Machine. As I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, I recently pinched a nerve in my brachial plexus ( lower neck-upper back ), that has resulted in an almost constant pain. Chiropractic adjustments have provided a modest relief only. The chiropractor wants me to do aseries of 56 adjustments over the course of the followiing year. When I heard this, I thought to myself there must be a more effective therapy to get thru this. I googled alternatives to chiropractic. At the top of the list was a link to a naturopath in NY (http://healmedoctor.com/chiropractic.html - broken link). On this page, he addressed the issue of chiropractic and suggested using a Chi Machine. For whatever reason, it really resonated with me, so I placed an order for my own Chi Machine. It has not yet arrived, so I have no personl experience to share with you all at this point in time. I will let you know how my body responds to it. I have high hopes!
Now you may wonder why I'm posting this on a thread about walking a thousand miles. I'm doing so because the injury in my neck has affected my walking style. Since I'm in pain when I'm walking, I'm walking fewer miles. I've cut back from 5 miles a day to 3 miles a day.
I did get in my first run in months today because i posted that i would. don't know how far because i took a different route than planned. but regardless, i think i ran for 15 minutes. not far but at least i did it!! in the rain, i hate rain!!!
I'm not going to post daily with reports of my mileage but today I'll tell you that I was able to do two miles and I feel good. Now if I can do it, you can too. 2010 is now two months away. Getting ready?
This was an eight mile week for me. Two "ones" and two "threes". It may not seem like much to you but it's evidence that I'm warming up and getting ready for our thousand miles together. How about you? With about six weeks left, I figured I'd hear more squeeking joints loosening, more rummaging through the closet for those good sneakers, more heavy breathing ...
Charley...I've done thousands of 3 milers over the years, and I know what that feels like. IMO, you're not merely warming up......a 3 miler is a darn good walk. Kudos for your progress!
... and here's another hint from your Uncle Charley who's here to help you ...
You might decide to go take a two mile walk one day, just like me. You might work it out so that you walk one mile away from home and then back, just like me. You might forget to check the local radar for weather changes before you go, just like me.
You might get very wet when it starts raining when you are one mile away from home. just like me.
I'm dry now - and will remember to check the local radar next time I head for the door.
