Tell her that the only time you'd get a heart attack during a run is if you already have a preexisting heart condition or some major heart surgery in the past. Or you had a long history of smoking in the past. The only reason why running guru Jim Fixx dropped dead of a heart attack, during a run, was because he was a long time smoker before he got into running and jogging. And it caused damage to his heart already (he already had a preexisting heart condition).
Ahh, the myths we runners/joggers have to go through, huh?!
That's why it's good to get a thorough physical exam with your doctor before you start a daily running/jogging routine.

My mother in law is an alarmist person overall. She's a great person, but I swear she wouldn't be happy if she didn't think the world was going to end next week.

Not all avid runners and joggers are thin. I'm not. I'm curvy and athletic, and been running since I was 12 (size 8). You don't have to be super thin to run a 5K or 10K. That's for sure...
Trust me, I Know. I am thin framed, bless my good luck and my good genes. But running... I can pass on. Its just something I just wont do for not even a mile.
The in-laws are visiting, and she commented to me on how I need to "be careful running because it's so hard on your body!" ...and that it can cause internal bleeding because of "all your organs sloshing around" when you run.
I tried to explain to her that humans and biologically made to run, and that unless you have a preexisting issue...running is beneficial, not harmful...but my efforts were futile.
I swear, I love this woman, but she drives me NUTS sometimes.

Yeah, people who have been lifelong sedentary, non-athletes are great at justifying their aversion to anything even remotely resembling exercise. Your post reminds me of one of my Dad's favorite anti-running maxims. When Jim Fixx, who wrote the landmark book "The Complete Book of Running" --which launched the whle running boom in this country--died of a heart attack while running several years later, my Dad used his death as indisputalbe evidence that running is bad for you. (Never mind the fact that Fixx was an obese heavy smoker and drinker before he cleaned-up and began running, and surely would have died long before he did had ne not embarked on his jogging regmin!)
So, my Dad has always thought I was crazy for being as a lifelong devout runner, and former high school and college track guy. Despite this, I've continually hounded he and my Mom to exercise a little, and I take it as a personal victory that I have finally gotten them to atl least walk in the mornings.
