That makes sense, and don't a lot of them have stylists who perform that function, as well?

My ex is who is worth millions dresses everyday normal except wearing an $80K watch. If you know your watches, you know he has money. Only when we hit the town did you realize he's worth money as he was wearing $4k worth of clothes on top of a $100+K watch..

My household income is $150K a year.

I usually wear t-shirts, polo shirts, jeans and cargo shorts, tennis shoes and a $250 watch. I travel in Europe every so often and have expensive hobbies though. That's where I spend a more money.

I am beginning to gather from this thread that we 150-500k people are not the wealthy people they're talking about.

That could be. I haven't read through this thread. Usually, "higher income" means upper-middle class.

But even if I were upper class, I'm not sure I'd dress all that differently. I think it depends a lot on your social circles and individual tastes. Also, where you happen to be. When I go to New York City, I tend to dress up a bit more because I go to some classy restaurants and hotels.

Interesting to think about.

Yes. I, too, find it appropriate to dress for the occasion. But left to my own devices, I am not interested in high maintenance clothing. Jeans and a tshirt will do.

How does higher income means upper class? You could be earning half million a year and be in debt.

What about a person who is retired and has a few millions?

Well, anyone could have expenses that minimize the impact of their income. I think people, when they just drop the 'higher income' phrase, want us to believe in the 'normal' lifestyle that goes along with that income.

Do most people with high incomes have tremendous debt? How 'high' is 'high'?

A retired person with a few million could also have great debt.

Again, a few million, if that's all you had, might not go that far in NYC. Does the person have to purchase a home with it? Is he living off the principle or trying to invest and live off the interest? Where would you invest a couple of million today, safely, with interest high enough to live off of?

I work with a lot of wealthy people. And they wear scrubs most of the time. Usually with a ratty sweatshirt...of an elite Ivy League college. These folks are not super rich....but make around 250k a year. They work too much to really bother with buying clothes.

But again...hair, teeth, skincare, watches....you can tell who has lots of disposable income.
