Great discussion! I would say the two things that are the most important are:
1. Skin
2. Teeth
Seriously. Take great care of both, use expensive face creams, whiten your teeth.
Other than that, a lot of it is what you don't have: yellow/blond hair, rhinestones, bright colors, chunky highlights, knockoff anything (especially a knock off of a bag rich people would never wear).
That being said - looking beautiful and classy is great, but looking like a desperate wannabe or worse, like a pretentious snob, is not what I would strive for.
On another subject, the best way to marry rich is...to become an M.D.!
I've been here for several years and people here wear clothes from the 1980's . They don't buy new clothes here. They wear whatever they have until it falls apart and then order more from land's end or LL Bean. It is the most unfashion place I've ever lived. No one will ever pay attention to how you are dressed here unless you are half naked or skanky.

I've heard they wear a lot of Lilly Pulitzer in Grosse Pointe...
There is lots of good info here, but I would add that part of wealth is breeding.
Remember when Bush first came into office, and how people would laugh at his misuse of language? Remember how polls showed people trusted him because they could sit next to him in a bar and converse? You would want to avoid these things.
Bush may have money but lacks class. His attending the best of schools seems to have contributed very little.
I have noticed that the people who have established money seem to speak in more subdued tones than the rest of us.
They ennunciate their words properly (NPR often features people who discuss language).
They often 'spot' each other by these small, subtle, things.
Learn good table manners.
When you buy clothing, be sure it FITS. The brand and quality of fabric may have importance, but things that do not fit properly just look frumpy no matter how much you may have paid.
Again, use makeup and jewlery and perfume wisely. Less is always better than more.
Trim harsh edges off of your personality, if there are any. Learn graciousness.
You might want to join organizations dedicated to the furtherance of the arts and do volunteer work for some charity.
The few people that I have known with money did not have the aggressive rough edges that their poorer fellows often did. Many did not have to struggle for existance. Going to good schools and seeing the best therapists for any problems you may have, travelling, having exposure to good art and music, etc, enhance the possibility of a well-rounded individual with cultivated tastes and fewer character defects.
Sure, many of the wealthy have their own set of problems especially with 'new' money.
I would think the more money you had, the more you would attract people who would take advantage of that. This would drive you to only associate with people similar to yourself. Understandably.

Where's "here"? Let me know quick - so I can steer clear of wherever "here" is!

I have seen people that truly had class that didnt have a dime, or breeding, and quite the reverse from people that supposedly had both.
Read up on the classics, read about antiques and chi chi vacation spots - just educate yourself in general.
I can always tell a poor person by bad teeth or skin.
Also - lets face it - if you are beautiful the rich will be attracted to you - they love beautiful girls but usually marry the horse faced women with trust funds
she would be better off worrying about her future education goals. 18 turns into 30 and then 45 quicker than you think and spending too much time trying to marry rich is a waste of time. People generally don't marry outside of their social and or income circles. She may be able to party with the rich guys and think she can marry one, but probably not. she would be better off working on creating her own wealth the old fashioned way and then possibly marry someone like herself to begin creating a new generation of wealth. Each generation builds upon the last to create wealth in a family line. I hope she matures and gains a better perspective on life. Learning to dress nice and be well groomed is a good start but not the end all be all.
Ding ding ding. I have never understood why people think the rich are fooled by costuming? They didn't amass affluence by being taken in by every 18 year old with a Speedy knockoff.
My friends ask me how I "scored" a "Rich guy" and I just laugh. My boyfriend and I are from similar social classes, met through WORK and I wasn't carrying a Prada bag or flashing mad bling!
In case you're wondering I was wearing khaki gap pants, a purple sweater, burgundy rainboots and coat. Nothing bling encrusted or flashy.
I guess my friend didn't realize I was "rich" or whatever.

The rich don't marry beautiful women they use them as sex toys. And also to have children for them outside of their marriage.
