I had to re-tie my tie at work today and while I was in the bathroom I closed my eyes taking a little standing nap while I re-tied it. I realized I normally tie my tie in the dark because I do not want to wake up my wife by turning on lights. Thus, tying a tie with my eyes closed is just normal to me. Is this a special skill? Should I go on the entertainment circuit?

Setting aside the fact that it is of limited entertainment value, that skill is by no means unusual. I've been tying ties regularly for over fifty years so it would be shocking if I couldn't tie one (regular or bow tie) with my eyes closed. I bet most men who wear ties could do it.

I haven't worn a tie in about 10 years (that was at a wedding) but had to wear one every day to work from 1975-1992. I can still tie one in the dark, as I did most of those years to avoid waking my wife. To be completely honest, I did then check it in the mirror when I got downstairs just to make sure it looked right. The real trick is selecting matching shoes in the dark. I did once go to work with odd shoes, one brown and one black. After that I would lay them out the night before.

The real trick is untying it to avoid spilling coffee on the morning drive, then tying it in the parking lot of your meeting, without standing for the right length reference.

You're covered now. You're either emulating the Dilbert tie or the Trump Tie, so anywhere from your crotch to your belly button is good.

I'm spatially challenged so I never found looking in the mirror helpful. I just get confused =D

I couldn’t figure out how to tie a tie the last time I wore one like 4 years ago even with a YouTube video. Ugh.

I could easily tie it in the dark, but it would likely be to short or too long. I usually have to re-tie it to get the length right even with the lights on. Who wants to look like Trump!

Yes, but I don't think I could do a perfect length and knot. Need a mirror.

My son wears a trinity knot when he wears a tie. I doubt that is doable in the dark. I cannot even do it well in light, in front of a mirror and with a u-tube tying guide playing on my phone.

Some knots just are not worth the hassle.
