Huh?

Unemployment Rates by Metro Area April 2011:

Jacksonville 9.7%
Orlando 9.9%
Tampa 10.5%
Miami 11.1%

Looks pretty even to me, with a slight edge to Jacksonville...

Jacksonville surpassed Orlando for lowest unemployment rate? I could have sworn Orlando was the lowest in the state last month in the paper. I am very surprised about that one considering the time of year and the tourism going on right now in Orlando.

Over on the West Coast, we have Semenhole, Penniless Park, Larghetto, and the state's third-largest city, whose residents are Tampons.

Jacksonville has the advantage of being more diversified (at least in my opinion) than Orlando, which thrives primarily on tourism obviously. Actually Gainesville has the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 7.0%, followed by Fort Walton Beach/Destin at 7.1% and Tallahassee at 7.4%...then it's a pretty big drop down to the large cities that start in the high 9% range.

Jax has had a lower unemployment rate than the 3 other FL cities for most of the recession. It does not rely on service industry, real estate, or tourism. It has a major port, the military, and is a healthcare and financial/insurance services hub. In fact, the only thing that has dragged down that city economy wise beside poor leadership is being attached to Florida.

Economy - Jacksonville or Tampa
Safety - Tampa
Family - Jacksonville or Tampa
Culture - Depends on what kind of culture you want. Miami for international flare and Hispanic culture and some history, Jacksonville for fine arts, Jax and Tampa for 3-4 generational Florida culture (often mistaken for Deep South, but really transplants who came to these cities between 1880 and 1930 and stayed), also some Deep South "Florida natives" and southern transplants in both cities and in Orlando just to be clear.
Sports - Miami
Nature - Jacksonville

Now if you had different criteria like diversity, nightlife, airport, etc then Miami or Orlando might top your list more often.

I said job opportunities not unemployment rates. I can commute to Broward and still live in Miami.
