It's called an "AVERAGE" for a reason. Remember averages are not accurate.

That is the daily mean it means nothing. And really it makes perfect sense. Climates like Key West or Miami do not have drastic changes often. Especially since Key West is a small island with the water keeping the weather pretty similar most of the year. A place like NC will have drastic changes, heat waves, ice storms etc.. For exmaple IMO Miami has a much better climate then DC or NYC. Why? Sure Miami is hot in the summer but so is NYC and DC it very often is hotter up there then it is down in Miami. But then they get codl winters also.

Ocean breezes and earths tilt at this time of the year. Key West is close to equator so it doesn't get the big extremes places further from the equator get.

You could look up high temperature records for most places up north and you will see higher record temperatures of near 100 or more while places like Miami or Key West rarely if ever get that high.Pretty much every year around this time you see higher temps up north, wait a month or two and when Miami is still in the low 90's every day,the highs up north have already started coming down to near 80 or less.

A mean temperature of 84.5 for the month is not that cool.

A high of 90 and a low of 70 for 31 days gives you a monthly mean of 80 degrees.

A high of 95 and a low of 75 for 31 days gives you a monthly mean temp of 85.

Yet nighttime lows in the keys stay above 80 in the summer.

And the humidity is much higher than most places so the heat index can be 100 by 10 AM even if the temp is in the mid 80s.

I noticed that the heat index for Miami today at 93 was higher than it was at Dallas at 102.

That's exactly it. It's the dew point which jacks up the heat index and makes it unbearable.

Every summer this happens. Someone comes on the forum and says, "Look at how it is so much hotter in ________." But when you figure in the dew point it feels so much worse in Florida, especially south and southwest Florida. And then there is the fact that Florida's heat seems to go on forever.

I didn't mind the heat at all when I lived there. Heck, I use to drive around without AC, walk or take the bus a lot at one point.

But I cringe when people compare up north to Florida weather. There is no comparison. If you are truly bothered by northern heat don't even consider living in Florida from April through at least September.
