and I am UPSET!!! I know this is all public record, but if one really wanted to know, some digging would have to be done. PLUS, my salary and many others are not even correct saying we made anywhere from 5-9k more a year! And along with this, it didn't say how many years of service or what extra pay was included. It was done as a reporter (who is anti-teacher) asked if the taxpayers were getting their "money's worth" in regards to the people the state employed, and all I can say is that it has turned people against each other per the letters to the editor that have been printed, and forget about ever raising the millage when the time comes for schools.

Has this happened to anyone before? And should I feel not only violated but outraged as well??? How would you feel??

I'm a state employee so I know what you are talking about. Honestly, I don't really have a problem with people finding out how much (or more correctly, how little) I make. I first saw the searchable website a couple years ago and all you had to do was check by department or by employee name. I haven't checked it in a long time, but last time I looked at it they had my pay correct. Since my pay hasn't changed in six years I can only assume the website is still showing the same numbers.

When you work for the general public then they are paying your salary. The general public has every right to know what you make. I fail to see how you are outraged by this.

I hope those who look at the web site take note who makes the big bucks. It sure ain't the blue collar workers.

This is true, but I think there is a difference between it being somewhere where a person would have to look for it, and it being posted in the public eye for everyone to see, esp. since so many salaried that were listed were not correct and there was NO explanation of years of service or other factors that would have made the salary higher. People just see the MONEY when it is like this and not the person behind the $.

I don't know the website (or article) but, if it reveals the information at the individual employee level, I don't think the general public should have the right to know what an individual public employee earns. I see nothing wrong with making the information available in a general way (i.e. a teacher with a masters with 5 years of experience earns x dollars or what have you) but there are privacy concerns, too.
Regarding those who earn the "big bucks", I would never expect blue collar workers to earn "big bucks" compared to supervisory/executive positions. That's kind of the point.

I wonder if the number reported includes benefits?

It is not different. Why should a taxpayer have to dig out that information? They should have full access to the information. The MONEY is all that is important to the taxpayer. If a job can be done for $10 I want it done for $10. I really, truly don't care why the government paid $20, I want it done for $10.

Here in Ontario Canada, all public employees who make over $100.000 a year are published. I don't think that's unfair, it comes with the territory of being a highly paid public servant.
All the rest of the salaries are confidential as they should be.
