Yes! There is a looooot of rural land up here in the Florida panhandle! Do a search in the little towns around Tallahassee. Prices are still fairly more reasonable up here than what you'll pay for 10 acres for points South of here!

Pipe down Angie...lets just keep Suwannee County to ourselves.

Are you kidding? You bet there is plenty of land. My husband and I have been looking for land these past few months and there are affordable parcels in the northern counties. Make sure you get your ag exemption before building a house.

Yep, Suwannee County for sure! Lots less expensive than southern Florida and friendlier too!

Not near any major metro area. And if you happen to find any land that size, it will cost you a LOT of money, make no mistake.

Maybe if you go to Northern FL, somewhere around Pensacola... check out these towns you see off the highway with weird names....

If you buy into Northern FL, you will meet a ton of real southern people and they are super friendly. You will be treated like family (in contrast, if you move to Miami and you are American, you will be treated like an immigrant into the "Republic of Miami" or if you come to Orlando you will be dealing with mostly unfriendly northern folk as the FL natives are the minority).

You are making the right choice looking for open land... you will be among the best people in the US... Southern folks! So look for land in north FL. Land in Central or South FL will cost you an arm and a leg. Possible your immortal soul as well as part of the down payment.

I am looking to do this with my land, but the dept of agriculture has not been helpful. Any ideas on how to do it right, or what crops are good for a 5 acre lot?

What does the ag exemption actually come to? Say for example a property that is taxed at $200,000 and .20 millage to make the numbers easy.

Can one get an ag exemption on only 5 acres? For some reason, I thought it had to be at least 10.

I remember people getting it for "specialty crops" like pineapples and papayas.

I was just reading it and 5 acres would be fine. The big problem is the price you pay for the land. If you pay, according to what I just read, 3 times or more the ag value of the land you will have a hard time getting it. For example land may be worth a few thousand an acre as ag but you buy something for like $85,000 for a 5 acre piece you would be hard pressed to call it ag land. I don't think it is as easy as some would like to think. A lot of hoops to jump through and it may not be worth it to just save on taxes. It could cost you more then the savings.
