It is all tourist based. Even with the retirees when they come here buy condos, pay taxes, spend money at restaurants, etc.

Why are there so many EMPTY homes and condos now? Really, are there that many NATIVE Floridians to fill them???????

ppl from calif and the midwest, etc... will continue to mive here... floridians are not really fond of the nyc/newark bunch anyhow. there are some good ones of course, but i think that many of us arent really going to care... a little more breathing room... less aggression on the roads...

I'm from the midwest. I'd never recommend anyone moving to SW FL. Most non natives we've met are NY/NJ. They are like anyone else down in this area. Am starting to see a lot of MI, IN, & PA plates as Nov gets closer though.

I'll take a New Yorker over a Michigan retiree, any day.

I'll tell you something about New Yorkers. They may seem brusque; it's the accents, the mannerisms. But they will do anything for you. Ask them.

Then ask a retiree from Michigan. They just might try running you over with their Caddy.

My dad is from the Bronx. I love New Yorkers.

I personally think the retirees from NY are great, very wise people with some amazing experiences to share. Some of them are a little grumpy but in general these people really just have "Something".Maybe not charming, but I think you know what I am talking about. I have found that people in the midwest are fantastic, but for some reason the retirees that settle in FL get really nasty. That being said, people are people, and when it comes to my every day life, I am looking at someone as an individual and nothing else.

When you are THERE people are nice. It's kind of like in Puerto Rico, where the culture is quite rich and warm, but when they get to "Puertolando", you know the drill.

The retired New Yorkers are different for sure, but if you give them a chance these are the wisest people you will ever talk to.
